  • Rat rod (or is it a hot rod?): general value on this?

I'm selling a flats/bay boat, this guy asks if I will trade him. I'm asking $11K for the boat, he's asking $13.5K for this:

27 steel coupe, model T bed (?), '67 350 & auto trans, not much else known for now.

Austin has an incredible appetite for these cars, wondering how big a gamble it would be.

Fuck a boat. That car is cool. But I'm know for making rash decisions and impulse buys are my specialty. So you should wait for someone else to chime in

I agree that it's vintage metal and looks cool, but I'm selling my bay boat to get a larger bay boat. No interest in this car, strictly flip/resale value.

I would say its worth 11k if the engine and drivetrain aren't worn out.

5-10 years ago you could see 13 all day for that, these days now that the crazy has died down, maybe 8? It's a much smaller marker than any boat. pics of the boat??

gotta jump on with danny, thats a badass boat, but an even smaller niche! i'd jump on that trade, and jack around with that hot rod for a minute. it wont lose value, and you are in centex where everyone wants a reason to go see jesse james!

$13.5k? I haven't kept up lately, but my guess is that you'd sit on it for a while. How long has he had it listed?

5 years ago when the market was probably a bit hotter I sold my '28 coupe with a custom (new from scratch, not scabbed together) Z'd frame, all new suspension, brakes, etc. and I let it go for $10.5k. Not discounting an original frame and split bones, but there's nothing special about it.

With a $13.5 for sale sign on it I'd keep walking and not look back.

few questions, is the body a real 27? or is a re-pop metal one. 2 speed or a turbo 400?

Also take a close look at the frame, is it boxed? Or is a new frame made for this build? The frame quality will be the major point. If the frame is done right, yea it is worth the 11K. You could not build that for 11k. Also if the frame is a piece of crap, it will not handle, ride or perform.

And naynay is correct, the market for these has gotten soft as of the last few years.

I don't hate it, but if you're expecting a quick flip for a profit, I'd pass.

If you want a hot rod to play with, it might be an interesting trade.

Rule #1 when looking at a car that's older than you are: Listen to Danny.

Looks like a pretty well done car, but I like it at $10K a lot more than $13,500. Model T's are not super desirable as hot rods go from a $ standpoint, and you're dealing with a very small section of the car buying market.

Lastly, I don't see anything "rat rod" about that car. Seems like a pretty straight up hot rod.

I think I'll just pass on it. Thanks all for the input.

I couldn't tell you the difference, just borrowing his text from his ad. There, that proves I have no business taking this thing on.

It's on Houston CL for anyone interested.
