                Abbreviation is not the correct spelling. You indicated universally recognized, which ALBQ is as well. A company I worked for used that as a branch code that was located in Albuquerque. But have it your way, Simon Semantics.

                  Yea, I've seen companies who abbreviate cites using fucked up letter codes. Why not just use the IATA codes that are known internationally? Everyone tries to do it better.

                    For that company, it was a matter of the number of branches. They used 4 digit codes for expansion, as well as 5 digit codes as they grew.
