There was a mix of them in there. The Florida gar is the more common, but I got a nice close look at a couple of alligator gar that were over 6 feet. Got a video of the bigger ones around here somewhere.

use a piece of rope on the end of a slab, untangle it some. They get the rope hung up in there teeth. They are almost imposable to hook due to there boney mouth.,

My boy at 4 y/o caught a 2.5ish foot gar (kid called it shark fish) on Texoma one evening.

On a boat - no gloves...only a machete. Got it on boat with net, but the hook was stuck in it's snout/nose. Yeah, NOT calm/quiet fish. I was just to the point of going to cut the line and throw it back in (by any means necessary - even if the net had to go with it) - it went bezerk for about 10 seconds and the hook came out.

Yeah all of those were just regular ol spotted and common gar.

I didn't watch the video but the rope trick plus a decent steel/wire leader line works decent.

I fired my handy spear gun at it and my uncle advised me I had better be able to walk on water if I had hit that big bastard.
Yeah as others have said they can get pretty nasty when messed with. When I was a teen me and my friends used to do a lot of sight fishing. We'd walk down clear water creeks looking for bass. One friend must have stepped on a spotted gar, cause it reached up out of the water and left him a nice long scar down his leg. I don't like those mother fuckers.

But would the gar have known it was you that shot it? Or did your spear gun have a line attached to the arrow?

That's what you use for striper. Been on a few striper tours at Texoma. Guides always had us using slab spoons for striper.

Depends on the time of year as well, what time do you usually go? With live shad during or after spawning - you can't go wrong if you can find where they are located. Also, deep dive for trolling can work well in these same scenarios.
