It's dated and there's probably another thread on it elsewhere, but I'm curious as to what you guys think of this situation. Legally speaking, the guy was assaulting them with a deadly weapon, so it was legal for him to be dropped. However, I think a different course of action could have been taken and he could have still been alive. Thoughts?

      Play stupid games...
"Laws that forbid the carrying of arms...disarm only those who are neither inclined nor determined to commit crimes...Such laws make things worse for the assaulted and better for the assailants; they serve rather to encourage than to prevent homicides, for an unarmed man may be attacked with greater confidence than an armed man." - Thomas Jefferson, 1776

        Fixed.
By the book, they are justified. I just believe there should have been an effort to save the dude, despite his dumbass actions.

It's justified. They told him to drop it. He kept saying "shoot me" and he kept getting closer to the cop on the left, which tells the cop that he'll do anything.

A tazer wouldn't of worked because he had clothes on and a jacket. Mace wouldn't of done much help with anything.

I think that guy wanted to get shot. Did anyone else notice how he looked around, and then switched his approach, to make sure no one else got shot? He did that twice before he approached. Crapstang next time someone is coming at you with a knife (if it ever occurs), I want you to try and grab his arms, try to subdue him, or what ever it is you think you can do to stop him. Holy shit people are special sometimes. "Just gunned him down for no reason". What part of don't approach "anyone" with a knife in a threatening manner do people not understand. John Q citizen has exactly the same amount of rights as those officers do to shoot that guy if being approached like that. Don't steal and don't attack the police, or any one for that matter, and you will be just fine. Had It not been police that shot him it would not even have made the news. Yes, holy fuck there are dumb cops out there. This is not the case here.

It's hard to see in the video if he had a knife or not, but if he did, they gave him more warnings than I would have.

Fuck physically getting involved. There was a reason he was shot...and legally it's justified. I just think an attempt to take him down with the nonlethal equipment they had would have been better. He was asking for it, no doubt. Just seeing everyone's opinion here, not declaring he was innocently gunned down.

Cops don't mess around with folks with knives. There's a video of some South American guy with a knife that cuts about 6 cops and kills one in just a few seconds. I'll try to find it.

I was quoting the guy in the video.

You never approach or engage a hostile subject, that has a deadly force option in his hand, with anything other than deadly force. It has been proven time and time again, that 21 feet is close enough with a knife. Had he been just standing there, no problem. Two guys with lethal and one back up to go around the back of the squad, pop the hatch, and then deploy less lethal is perfectly acceptable. Even 21 feet is sketchy when we are talking about reaction times. Most of those videos, the guy that is armed knows the guys is going to attack, and they still need 21 feet. Just the fact you would think these guys had other options is crazy. I guess they could have thrown a giant net over him or something. Really, people have lost their minds defending some of these videos these days. Not all, but most are fully justified.

If every cop in America took a week off, people would be begging for the police to come back. I here people say all the time that they don't need police for anything. You have lost your mind if you think you know your neighbors that well. There are a lot of people that act crazy with the police around. That number would quadruple into chaos if people knew they had a free pass. A lot of people act right just because they know there are repercussions for their actions. There is a reason the law states " Would lead a reasonable person to believe". Their is a standard in this country that people have set, that they chose to live by, that is also changeable by their voting. Slowly, apparently that standard is dropping. Yes I know there are some shitty laws on the books, and I know their are some over reaching agencies, and officers sometimes. But it sure beats the damn alternative. Just like the prepping thread gets into. Let the shit hit the fan and watch what people are really like.

Look up what happened when Georgia (the country) fired all of its police force. All of them, down to the traffic cops.

Crime went down, things got better, and everyone was happy as could be. Food for thought as obviously the USA isn't Georgia but who knows.
