Like silverranger said, get some ears that slip over the lower unit at the water pick up lines and put water to it, start it up and get it to temp. I presume there is a water pressure gauge on the many gauges on that dash?

Did it come with a decent anchor? Pick up a Danforth style from Academy if you can, most others will not grab worth a shit when another boat's wake is rocking you up & down. You will want 3' of chain linking the anchor to the anchor line; durable, long line. Have extra bow lines (3 min) for docking & tying off, a tow line (for you or another boat), maybe bumpers (I have 3 and I need all 3 on Lake Austin when docking at the Hula Hut and other places with poorly designed docks), and all the stuff required by TPWD should you get pulled over for an inspection. Go to Academy with $300-$350 and spend it all.



Get a service manual and check your fluid levels, etc. Boats can be extremely rewarding if you are proactive on maintenance items.

exactly if the boats been sitting for awhile just give everything a good check, and for the love of god make sure the bilge pump works...

Holy shit that reminds me of the first time we took the boat out. The automatic bilge pump didn't work, and when I loaded it back on to the trailer, I pulled the big brass plug to drain the water. Seeing that it wasn't square on the trailer, I had the wife back us back in and I went back out to reposition, and there was some delay b/c the carb wasn't tuned worth a shit... I look down, and the water is at my feet, boat is sinking from the quarter sized hole I opened up in the belly. Got it back on the trailer, SMH.

Here are some tips for a boat newb

Have two sets of keys with

Boat keys, car keys, house keys ..always , and have one set on a floaty

Make sure you have at least 5 good life preservers and one throw-able all with current certifications .

one fully charged fire extinguisher .

and have everything in easy reach , cause the water patrol loves to write tickets for those items

don't assume, have them all checked before you hit the water


Have an extra plug with ,extra fuses

you run into trouble 1000' from shore ,you will shittin

My ex thought I was nuts when I filled ours up till the automatic pump kicked on, of course she was standing right where i knew it would shoot out so win win for me

i'd advise cleaning out the boat immediately after use and letting it dry.

i'd recommend covered storage, if it's stored uncovered, then like mentioned above get a good cover. stick a couple of tall 2" pvc pipes under to make the cover tent up to let water run off and not puddle. nothing ruins a floor faster than being soaked by rain and it not drying.

I rent one very similar to that when I go to arkansas. Sucker is a lot of fun, has zero problems pulling a tube or a water skier at high speed.

I only ran the boat for about 4 seconds without h2o hooked up- I was just seeing if it would crank (not start) and it fired up immediately. I'm going to buy some muffs for it, I'll probably change the oil as well. Need to test bilge pump.

4 seconds could easily have burnt the impeller, the clearance on them is ever so tiny an it only takes a minute to do damage

How long can a motor run out of water before impeller damage?

might be lucky, might not. had an impeller that worked still after 2 minutes of run time. had one that went out 5 seconds after cranking up.

its rubber inside a dry housing. friction will heat it up and melt/deform it. you may still get a pee stream but it probably wont be nearly as strong.

Replacing the impeller is good idea anyway if you don't know the last time it was replaced. Check gimbal and do fluids.
