    (deep breath)

When you invade a dogs' territory, you make two choices: quiet and sneaky or loud and invite the initial contact. Quiet was usually easier and more often the best choice, but then you might get confronted unexpectedly and give them the upper hand. Loud and you'll get the confrontation over with, but you wont be able to proceed unnoticed, and you'll have to constantly claim your ground without turning your back for a second. If the owner is present, it's ten times harder, sometimes impossible.

They're simple creatures, ya know? Consistency is key and 99 percent do the same thing. The meanest dogs in the world are confused when you stand your ground, and of course you HAVE to have something to put between you and the business end of Fido. Anything. "Feed" it as I would say, just to keep the teeth off of your flesh. I usually used whatever was around but I NEVER went empty handed. I've only been bit once and it was a little fucker when I turned my back and let my guard down. It's a helluva rush to stand there inches from severe injury, dog going nuts, and just wait it out.

I'm speaking from my ample experience, but yes I have encountered quite a few that even I couldn't back down. I knew when to push and when to yield and fight another day. I will not hurt a pet that is doing what its' supposed to. Unlike these tough guys who went in looking for a fight, like Rick said. It's sad that some occupations simply train their folks for this, and cops are clueless as usual, shoot first mentality so they can "go home at night." I've been doing what I can to change this for the last ten years, but as you know, some folks are just unreachable and looking for an excuse to fuck someones' day up.

My favorite comment from folks was "he won't bite." I assured them if the dog had teeth, he will bite! Lol.

You and I have never had cross words.

That dog got shot after the police announced their presence and the owner released it. The homeless man was trespassing and the police were there because of a 911 complaint about the trespassing and an aggressive pit bull. Guess what the cops got after announcing themselves? a face full of charging pit bull.

Do I agree with shooting dogs with reckless abandon? Absolutely not. Would I have shot that dog? Instantly. Devil's advocated says: I'm there, as a police officer, serving a complaint for an aggressive dog and lo-and-behold, I find a VERY aggressive dog. It charges me after we announce ourselves because the dog's owner released it. I say released it because they were rummaging around for a few minutes and walked by the tent several times... the dog never came out. My feeling is that the homeless guy let it loose on the FWPD. The homeless guy brought a fucking "pet dog" to a gun fight. Shitty deal.

Concur with this, they were trespassing and that's the key. It's not like he was at home with his dog and this happened. Everyone agrees maybe they should have said something sooner, actually I do not understand why they would not announce themselves sooner - besides that, you best keep your dog under control when you're in the wrong 100% and they are yelling at you through your tent.

Baba, maybe I am a pussy but I would have shot the dog too - not happily, but I understand it happening. I too noticed the possibility of hitting someone else with that shot though - but that's another discussion.

Now, if they were not trespassing - this discussion would be 100% different for me.

I haven't watched the video but I had a German Sheppard that would have drug Baba through the yard like a rag doll. Had a guy once just like him, tried the stand your ground, yell at the dog theory. Dog tore his ass up, then grabbed him by the ankle as he was trying to get over the fence. Stand your ground or retreat he would eat you up. Dog had a whole lot of I don't give a F#@# to him. Great around us and everyone that knew us.

^^^sorry but I'm too fucking quick to give them an ankle. I'd be dead by now.

Those cops went looking for a confrontation, and the guy shares some blame, no doubt. Shitty situation, but my badassery is best displayed by taming the beast, not putting it down. Much like my dating life.

The fact that it was a pitbull eats up a lot of my sympathy. I really wouldn't give a rip if every last one died instantly this second.

I agree, they seem to be the choice for the irresponsible, and I think they're useless. I think that's the only reason more folks aren't outraged. They're just cleaning up the hood. If that was a Lab? Totally different outcome.

I still hate to see someone's' companion shot dead. It's probably all that poor bastard had.

You two drank all the kool aid.

Any dog or animal that is kept as a pet is useless. I'm sure it just warms your little heart to come home to a wagging tail everyday.

My pets also serve a purpose of protection/security as well as companionship. They will always have a job.

All of the worst dogs I have ever seen were pits. 20 of 21 attacks my Battalion Chief saw in Lancaster were pits. The other was a GS. We had this discussion as they were getting ready to transport a 10 yo that had his throat and face ripped up by one.

Short summary of what I saw:
                            Cops executed the response poorly
Owner assaulted the cops by sending the dog
Owner put the dog and officers in a bad situation
Police reacted well within their rights and the law
A dog lost its life doing what it thought was its job

The dog was the only one not to blame.
