There is a right of passage by joining any branch of service that can't be skirted around. If you don't understand that, you would if you went through it.
There are however levels of respect given to those in our military (past/present) that do the things other men won't or can't. This respect is in addition to general service.
I was a light armored vehicle mechanical in the Marines. I don't expect much from anyone for it. Hell, I think I had a greater impact and was in far greater danger as a contractor, at times. But the pay makes up for the lack of acknowledgement and I am/was 100% satisfied with that.
Anyone trying to pass themselves off as something there not is a weak person to me. Trying to play dress-up and pretend to have served is the lowest form of that.
