I've jumped out of planes having engine failures.. just like i have landed in planes having major problems. Actually, landing in an overstressed airframe (twin otter that pulled 6-7G) was probably one of the stupidest things i did in my skydiving career.

Why'd you stick around and land?

As a guy who regularly jumps at 1,800-2,400 feet, they are much higher than 2,500 ft.

Young and dumb. i was flying right seat, and figured I'd stick around. The T.O. ended up being deemed unflyable by the and they had to take it apart and truck it to Dehaviland to be rebuilt/certified. the horizontal stabilizers were bent up in a V and the main wing spar was bent pretty significantly too. we were lucky the wings didnt fold up.

I thought the chute automatically pulled at a certain height?

I know our guys had those devices in my last unit. I'm sure they're common, if not required in civilian parachuting. I'd rather the buddy (coach most likely) have pulled it than rely on a device though.

I was just wondering because everyone is acting as if he avoided certain death.

The student definitely had an AAD, they arent allowed to jump without one. I never ran one because i was young and dumb and also flew CRW which can deploy reserve while you are already under a main. Talk about sketchy
