  • Shifting a 3 stick mack transmission.

Man things have gotten a lot easier. I know how to drive a 2 stick triplex Mack but Iv never seen a 3 stick.
explanation-One stick is the main. Think of it as a normal shifter in a car 1-4 or 1-5.
2nd stick is for a gear spliter. Once you gone through all 5 gears you shift the spliter and then shift your main stick through the gears again 1-4.
Im not sure what the 3rd stick in the video is for unless its an auxiliary add on or something.

Man screw that must be a mac thing.. I have driven trucks with either 10 or 18 speeds and 5 or 6 range selections but they weren't anything complicated like that silliness.

I have no idea what was going on there.

So, you have to be college educated to drive a Mack?

Fyi, the guy in the video is playing with the shifters more than you have to. Sort of showing off. This is a 2 stick triplex trans with 3 main gears. It's easier to tell whats going on.

Ah memories! My uncle Bob Anderini ( dad's side of the family) worked for Mack back in the 50's-70's and I had other relatives (uncles on mom's side) who drove for National Rolling Mills out of Malvern Pa.. All Macks at the time and had either the triplex or quadadplex which were aux to the main transmission..

We've got an old 2 stick Mack dump truck in our shop right now, give me a newer air split shifter any day of the week. Also: the reason that guy in the first video was doing that with the shifters is because it makes it easier and quicker to get it in gear.

Edit 2. The first video is a Kenworth, not a Mack.

Nah, I'm good with the 10 speed and one flip of the switch.

Our last haul truck was a KW with a 5&4. Wasn't bad after a while. The 13.5 foot Dozer blade on the trailer was another story. Damn thing looked like it was hanging over both ditches on some fm roads.

This is why I only drive automatic transmission cars.

What's the old saying, Fear the gear!
