Just be careful who you send it to for that kind of work...paint prison is a terrible thing. My 70' Convertible is non-living proof. After spending over 2-years there I got the car back in worse shape from when it was dropped off.
...I've since learned how to weld body panels.70' Chevelle RagTop

On the way there....
The day I picked it up ....
Seriously...do ALL of the background checking you can, research the shop well, and avoid those smaller operations. If they want ANY money up-front, find someone else.
It's been a long horrible story on mine, I'd hate to see anyone else go through this sort of mess.70' Chevelle RagTop

A customer comes in ordering from all of the menu, take the car apart, do everything short of a rotisserie take down. Fix every single dent and body wave. Block and shadow sand the primer because I want "AutoRama" car show straight body. I also want you apply multiple coats of clear coat and color sand and buff/polish the whole car and jambs too.
Shop does everything and doesn't get a dime upfront because that's not the way business is done. Customer comes in all of the time changing up the original "estimate" and adding things to be taken out and redone. When the car is finally finished, customer is now where to be found. Countless labor hours, material costs have been spent, not to mention the changes and customer hassling the shop about how long its taking and he needs it for "The Hot Rod Power Tour".
Most times the shop has to file a mechanics lien just to get the customer to pay the final bill, which now has led to the body shop losing money on this custom job. Yes, I've seen both sides and mostly my side...

Thanks guys. Paint jail is perfect term for any body stuff. Its kinda painful. The hood took over three month and it was almost perfect. Won't be taking car there. Hood looks good. $640 good i dunno. Raymonds in Crowley did the paint. Shop where going always seems to be spitting out cars to get paid. Apparently Corbets shop across street where Fired up guys go. Doubt I could afford him to paint now lol.
Cool to see a few Chevelles on the board. Greatest thing about here is the diversity of cars and we all dig em. Not just mustang mustang mustang.

FWIW - this was not an insurance/collision shop (which I assume is the business you are in?), only restorations, and only A-Body GM cars....VERY specialized....so I think probably apples/oranges for this discussion anyway. That's the level of work the guy set expectations to. I wasn't in a hurry and made that clear up front...I wasn't working on any deadlines, but I also went into this deal only wanting new quarters and some other small bodywork, and a show quality paint job...I will admit my standards are pretty high when it comes to paint, but I also understand that comes with a $15K-$20K price tag on a car like this....money wasn't an issue. But of course we see here that it never even got close to paint. I also (stupidly) gave this guy about half of the money along the way...and had to finally show up randomly and threaten a beat down to get my car back even in this shape.
Disclaimer - not pointing a finger back, calling-out, associating, etc, etc...or trying to be offensive...just a little sore subject for me.70' Chevelle RagTop
