  • Start an engine with a 12ga round.

I would've thought you were a liar if you told me you had to use a shotgun round to start an engine.

I always had a thing for air starters also.

and of course, lest we forget:

"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin
"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury." -Alexander Fraser Tytler

I love the sound of them too. One of the brief moments of zen back when I was a compressor tech.

the big Ingersol Rand starters we had on our 115 liter Waukesha engines sounded awesome

Also can anyone explain how the shotgun shell starter works? I just can't finger it out

there are two different ways on using a starter shell on an engine.
First one is the gases discharged from the firing of the shell push down a tube onto the top of a piston, rotating the engine.

Second is the discharge pressure is applied to a screw type assy which in turn rotates the engine..

I hated all starters on compressors. Air starters were always rusted, clogged with salt, or slugged with water. Electrical starters always had some jack ass operator running the batteries down or managing to melt all the cables and batteries. The classic response was always "I only hit the button for 5 seconds".
I did like the sound of 35000 and 3600 cats.
