It's unnecessary for the sale, and can be off-putting. If I'm coming to you to give you dollars for a reason, and you make half the interaction about an unrelated issue, I'm going to be put off, because I don't get the impression that you're focused on selling me what I want to buy. Letting the customer think that you give a crap about anything but their purchasing experience is a mistake, regardless of your personal beliefs. Don't let personal business get in the way of real business.
