In Austin, we have very few quality* car wash options for a diy type.
We have the old guard, Genie, and you can't go to a self serve bay without being disappointed somehow. Low pressure, no chemicals (soap or wax), water spewing out of the overhead connection, maybe the thing doesn't even work. You put your $2 in quarters in, (no credit card) and you will not get a warning before time runs out.
We have *ONE* Palm's location in SW Austin that knocks it out of the park. They have the automatic/soft foam car wash ($8 for a basic wash, $10 for tire shine or rain x, $13 for both), and they have 2 guys on the front end spraying your front and rear bumpers and washing them down before you enter, then 2 guys with huge microfiber towels at the end to dry you off.
When you pull away, you can drive to the back and detail it. I believe sun shades are going to be installed next:
compressed air (clutch for blowing out side view mirrors, door trim & handles that trap water, fuel door, any other body moulding or line that holds water)
vacuums
towels
windex
I can't say enough good things about this place...
The only thing that this location doesn't have that one of their other locations has is the credit card at the bay, which I only use for the open air bronco, and the CC option is nice because it starts you off at $2 & goes up in increments of $.25, until you turn it off.
Since I'm always going to spray my car off if it has a film of dust or dirt on it, and I keep a microfiber towel with me, I'm keen on which car washes are shit and which are quality.
