WOT @ 1:10
See two world’s collide in this video of a Top Fuel Hemi converted to burn diesel. Sound crazy? A little Freak Show Friday? Perhaps. But while the 426 Hemi engine architecture is more than 50 years old—it’s still the go-to platform for extreme builds in all forms of motorsports.
Though you’ve seen Hemi engines burn gasoline, alcohol, and even nitromethane…here’s something you’ve never seen: a one-off Top Fuel Hemi designed to burn diesel fuel. In the video you’ll hear the engine fire and come up to speed before the driver goes WOT at 1:10 seconds into the video. No power numbers are given, but the engine builder says the target is 2,500 hp.
The engine was built by Curtis Halvorson at Extreme Engine Development in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. The bottom end is based on a Brad Anderson Enterprises (BAE) Top Fuel aluminum block that’s been fit with a custom diesel pistons and specially made billet-aluminum Hemi heads designed by Halverson to hold Bosch common-rail diesel injectors.
What kind of maniac is Curtis Halvorson? He’s the guy that built the world’s fastest Duramax diesel engine for the 341 mph Mormon Missile Bonneville Streamliner.
