  • Austin Area Get-Away.

I know I'm a little behind on posting this, figured I'd share the pics.

So for the July fourth weekend we were planning on doing the usual, going to New Braunsfels floatnig the river and pouring Keystone down our throats.

However, I thought it would be more fun to do some random things that we've never done before. The idea was to write things we wanted to do down on paper put in a baggie and draw randomly.

So with a rough idea of things we wanted to do we loaded up in the rented Focus and headed south. (ignore the border, stole the picture off the gf's FB)

    0400 Friday morning:

I worked late the night prior so my buddy did most of the driving:

Since we got an early start we beat most of the traffic and arrived before most things were open. So we drove around and took random pictures with/at things to kill time.

Random statue at the entrance of a nice neighborhood:

So then we drew the first things to do: Hippie Hollow

For those not in the know, this is a nudist beach with all kinds of sights you don't want to see. But it was something random to do and it was thrown in the baggie.

The gf and me (she wouldn't strip, sorry no pics)

    The girls:

From there we had to drive into Austin to see the wall paintings:

So after grabbing a bite to eat we checked into the hotel took a nap and got ready for going out to 6th Street.

Did the typical barhopping thing, yadda yadda yadda pics:

Watched some unfortunate souls have their vehicles towed

    Which concluded Friday.

Saturday we got up early and went to hit some natural swimming holes. We started off with Hamilton Pool. It was an underground river but the ground finally gave way causing a natural spring :

At the bottom of the rock we're standing on, it drops about 25 feet. And you can't touch until the complete opposite side of the pool. Mental note if anyone goes, so you won't have to find out the hard way like me.

After seeing this we headed to Jacobs Well:

    Did some jumping

Wrapped up there and headed to San Antonio

San Antonio wasn't a whole lot of fun, got there late and was already worn out so we just saw a few things and got ready to go back in the AM.

      Big boots

      Went to Dicks

      And called it a night.

Next morning we got up and headed for Enchanted Rock, which for me was the highlight of the trip

Saw all kinds of things and it's gorgeous here if you've never been.

Also had some caves you could explore, no guide no lights besides cell phones for us.

Message told me not to go that way

        Top:

And that was about the trip, for me I had tons more fun doing this and seeing things I haven't before. So if you ever get down that way I would highly suggest stopping by and seeing the stops if you can.
Most charge by the car load and not per person.

I wouldn't doubt if you ran into my best friend at some of those places. He hangs out at a lot of those areas, especially Jacobs Well.

looks like fun. what surprised me about Enchanted Rock was the fact that it is so deceptive. When you are at the bottom, it looks like you can see the top. You climb all the way up to that point and see a whole new set of ledges to the top. You have to repeat this several times before you actually see the top.

Oh yeah I thought I was going to scale it in 20 minutes or so... nope.
Every layer you just look up and say another one? Until finally you get to the top and get the nice view.

It is, especially when it's 100 out side and the water is around 60 degrees. Makes for a refreshing day.

No idea but watched some small kids jump torwards the edge because they were scared, and just knew they were going to hit their face on the side.

Nice, looks like you had a busy weekend. Been wanting to check out Hamilton pool for a while now. How busy/crowded is it?

Wasn't horrible, there's a "beach" that isn't visable in any of the pictures I have posted but that seems to be the place most people hang out. All along the back wall there is places to sit, which is where we chose to set up camp.

I will say this the absolute worst part is the hike down to the pool. It's probably close to 3/4s of a mile down a "mountain side" for lack of a better term. We made the mistake of carrying a cooler the whole way down and wore us smooth out.
Side note though, there is a Park Ranger Only path that is paved that we came up pulling the cooler, just limped around for a bit acting like we got hurt coming up the pass and no one said a word.
