  • Picked up a new weekend car

so after alot of thought, and looking at foxbodies and f bodies that ive already had a million of, i decided to go old. this is the oldest car ive ever owned, a 1972 Buick Skylark half converted to a Gran Sport. other then the obvious rust hole on the driver side the car is pretty clean. car has a 350/th350 with full exhaust demon carb and a poston intake. Havent decided if i want to throw a cam and a stall/shift kit in this combo or look for a buick 455. my first objective is to fix all the rust. then i want to get some 15x10 buick rally wheels with a tall 285 tire for street cruising. ill pick up some drag wheels when it actually goes fast lol.

Definitely go big block or the mighty ls.

A 455 would be a lot of fun, and, most importantly, it's not an LS.

Looking forward to watching some progress on this, always good to see another old car in the mix!

im not going to lie, your threads on your mopars along with the guys going to drag week had a big impact on the decision. ive thought about going LS but i think im going to stick with buick for the cool factor. seems like theres been quite a few guys going 11s with the 350s and spray, which is my goal. dont want to build an all out drag car.

Glad to see another "old car" project! But I will warn you. One muscle car project leads to another, and another!

Better find and buy one before the prices go crazy! Seems older trucks have really taken off in the past 4-5 years.

I've got a bunch of random GM A body stuff if you ever need any parts. I just Ebay'd the correct grill for that car a couple months ago!

Nice car, I love the skylarks. Does it have that ass backward Buick 350 in it? Thought my 69 Lesabre had a regular GM 350, then I noticed that the dizzy was at the front of the motor and the oil pump was external.

yes it does. i love the buick motors. theyre huge but weigh alot less (but make less power stock due to the insanely low compression and crappy heads)

Awesome! I've always been a fan of Buicks too...used to have one that looked real similar. I need to find some of those old photos and scan them.

Cool car! And being a 'classic' GM A-body, parts for it will be available. Except the engine stuff, lol.

While 11s doesn't seem all that fast anymore, a 4000lb Buick with a cast iron '70s engine that runs that number WILL be an all-out drag car. Maybe set your goal on some mid-13s. Or if you really want to go that fast, a big Chevy or LS is probably a better choice. Just being honest here.

i was talking 11s with spray. like a 150-200 shot and slicks and a decent cam and stall. quite a few people have done it. Kenne Bell did a bunch of studies on how to make these buicks fast back in the 80s.

the mach 1 is the previous owners. that pic was from the previous owner. i have a 2014 dodge 2500 diesel for my daily.

my first objective is to take care of the rust, put some big meats in the back and just cruise it. i will probably get a buick 455 in all honesty and build that. costs about the same as far as upgrades. obviously I'll see way bigger gains modding the 455 and who needs gas mileage. lol
