Why? The tech is basically here for drivers and pilots of any stripe to be replaced. We can't drive as well as the robots.

True... but I would rather have someone fly me than a robot. That's just my opinion though!

The tech is there sure. I still trust my life to a well trained human over a machine.

Machines can only respond to emergencies per their programming and, while pilots are essentially programmed to operate aircraft, they have the autonomy to deviate from whatever instruction set programmers might conceive of in dire circumstances.

That said, I've considered learning failure mode analysis because automation requires it, and that's the direction many technologies are going.

Agreed, the overwhelming majority of the traveling public echo's your sentiment. As Yale said, the technology is there now. We may not see this in our life, but it will happen.
As Moore's law progresses, so will this and the public will accept it.

I'm extra down for a self-driving car. I love the idea of going to sleep in my car after work on a Friday, and waking up first thing in the morning in Colorado or anywhere equidistant.

It will probably be pushed on us for public safety reasons. A machine can already drive a car better than a person.

Stewardesses however, will still be needed....

Do not know how to respond to this. You do know that shit fails from time to time.....right? Know what a MEL is?

Oh and who would flip this switch?
