I want one of these, white preferably, 4x4.

    What years are best?
    What transmission is best?
What mods should I hope to get?
What mods should I run from?
What price is retail, what's BIL deal?

    Any other suggestions?

This is not a DD, just something to tow with or for utility.

someone please move this to garage...

Man, I just saw a incredibly clean white single cab powerstroke in the body youre asking about. I saw it from a distance pull out of QT and I honestly thought it was a lightning... until he rolled coal. It was leveled with a rollpan. looked bad ass.

I looked at those crew cabs for a while. There's a surprising number of very clean ones left.

Values are all over. I'd prefer a 350 due to straight axle. The 5 speed is decent, the autos are shit. Should have kept my 95, best looking trucks Ford ever made.

They didn't have an intercooler, so I'd look to do that. Banks hard parts are ok, but don't offer much in performance. Before I knew better i dropped a ton on banks parts and picked up under 50hp to the wheels. That was also back in 96/97, so I'm at a loss about a decent direction now.

I have always liked those trucks and would love to have a crew cab too. My parents had a 96 f250 with 460 and the brakes sucked monkey balls. Not to mention it got at best 10mpg. The diesel would be the better choice like you are wanting.

I think the owner of Diesel Dynamics down in Joshua has a white lightning with a powerstroke in it.

I believe it was a longbed and it had f250 badges.
              Sure was damn clean though.

Good to know. Is the ride substantially harsher with a solid axle up front on these trucks?

Get ready to pay up. Short bed crew cab old body styles are pricier than superduties.

Not that I recall. I always thought the twin I beam front end rode like shit anyway. Felt like it was preloaded to bounce. Straight axle is a straight axle. Don't expect air ride.

twin I-beam is absolute shit and should be avoided at all cost

I had the displeasure of driving a CCLB SRW 5sp truck a couple days ago.

                        workhorse? yes

                        reliable? sure

something I want to drive ever?

Good luck finding a clean cc F350 short bed 4x4 with a 5 speed in white. I imagine there aren't very many out there, I never ran across one when I was looking. Did find some long beds with awesome interior colors.

They didn't make an F350 short bed in 95-97.

They don't come around often...really just clean CC, SWB 4x4's period (regardless of color or trans). The last few I've seen were in the $14K-$17K range. It's getting harder to find decent SWB CC's even in 2WD.

I've owned a number of these trucks myself, and I was trained on them when they first came out. The only year I would avoid are the 94's (actually 94.5), but there weren't many of them anyway. There are some fuel system and exhaust differences (among other little things) in the following 3 years, but overall you can't go wrong with any of them. Personally I always liked the 96's most.
