But it may be an opportunity to overhaul our entire infrastructure, allowing people to revolutionize multiple industries. As a stand alone piece of tech (ooh, a solar tile with LEDs) it's alright, but what if you can combine with other technologies. What if it could work in conjunction with power stations that could recharge electric cars when they park? Didn't the video point out that this would be a good time to also update the power grid and telecom lines? What about the road also including a RFID setup that works with GPS and autopilots vehicles? i honestly cant think of what else can go with it but there has to be people out there that can come up with something that would make it worth it. Yeah, it's going to be expensive, but there is the potential for true long term benefits if it doesn't get half assed. It probably won't happen though, just science fiction, blah blah blah...
Damn good question. It could be done through taxes, and be bitched about. Or, it could be done through corporations, paid through tolls, and bitched about.

If the goverment allowed corporations to plaster logos or have streets named after them they would do this. I bet att way or att street in arlington would happen in an instant.
The one idea I had, and I'm not saying its a good idea or would work but here it goes, would be for the government to build said solar freakin roadways then lease the roads to power companies to maintain, distribute, charge for power usage and of course pay a percentage to the govt. Like I said, may not be the best idea, but it's all I could think of at the moment.
