They were oblivious to the danger. Packs like that kill whales, a fiberglass boat is nothing. While they appeared friendly, who knows their motives. Ride the wake, maybe, get a look at the boat out of curiosity, maybe. I say territorial behavior in some form.

that said, they are protective of their young, they are big as fuck, have teeth, and you are out of your element. exercise caution.
