  • 1953 Ford Customline Tudor

Thought I'd share some pics of the new "toy" we got. Were looking around for a while for another old car to mess around with. Katrina decided she wanted to go to the Decatur swap meet so we went and found this.

I'm partial to the 52-54 body style. My dad's first car was a '52 and when I was 14 he bought one for me to try and restore. Ended up selling that car before it was finished...back to the people we bought it from oddly enough...anyways...

We looked it over, talked to the guy a while, struck a deal...spent an hour driving around Decatur trying to get enough money out of ATM machines, handed over the cash, and drove it the hour back home (would've been sooner if the car didn't top out at 65). For my first time driving a 50's car with a 3 speed on the column and no power steering or brakes...it went pretty smooth LOL

Got it home, washed it up, here's some more pics...

It came with new side glass that needs to be installed. The 215 inline 6 runs pretty nice, though definitely not a powerhouse. Rated at 101hp in '53. That paired with the 3 speed and the 3.91 gears make for a slow goer on the highway. I think I'm fine keeping the motor and I love having the 3 speed on the column but it needs a rear end swap to some more highway friendly gears. Also the wiring on it is pretty iffy. It's been hacked on and brittle. I'd like to do a new harness and upgrade to a 12V charging system and get all the lights and things working correctly. Hopefully throw some lowering blocks in the rear and get the front down some more before April. Gonna head down to the Round Up and meet some buddies down there.

One last shot. My dad said it reminded him of Ozzie and Harriett...lol I think they look pretty good in there

Cool! That is a neat little car. Your plans sound solid. Have fun with it.

that's sweet. I'd add low to it and roll it as is.

          Little 6 cylinder motor

That little motor may be a little underpowered, but it is as tough as a boot. Be care with the rear end change. If you get to high in gearing, it will really kill the low end power. It would be neat if you could find one of the over drive 3 speeds with the electric shift solenoid and the kick down switch that goes under the foot feed. The over drive cars came with I think a 4.10 rear end, but the overdrive was about a 25 per cent reduction. That would give you about a 3 to 1 final drive in over drive.

                I like it.

The column shift is a plus. Nobody will ask you to drive it.

Very nice man, congrats on the score. And I agree on the gear comment. Too high would hurt drivability.

That's my plan mostly. Fuckin wide whites are expensive though and it's got fairly new tires on it already. Don't see deals too often on WWW tires either. Maybe some port-a-walls for now will do the trick

I don't think it could hurt that much seeing as it barely gets past 10 mph now in first, and it's making all sorts of noise trying to keep at a minimum highway speed. From what I've read a 67-68 Mustang rear will swap in pretty easy. Also heard Mavericks and Explorers as well. Just hoping to keep it cheap and easy. Don't have tools here to cut and weld spring perches and stuff.

Lincoln Versailles rear end. Disc brakes FTW

Oh, and the Versailles is 58 1/2" rotor/rotor and e-brake is a PITA to make work.

Maybe back in the 90's. Good luck finding one now.
