So i have a fish..

Picked up a tank and everything last night local and got it set up last night enough to get by.
Only fish that I got with it was this Red Devil Cichild. And the reason is because he doesn't do well with others, bites heads off.
Cant even put alot of stuff in the tank because he will uproot it and shove it into a corner.
Hes about 13 inches long, and id say roughly 2-3lbs.


Its a 150 Gallon tank with a pretty small filter and small heaters.
Im new to all of this so if theres anyone thats fluent with this stuff, please feel free to direct me to the right place to pick up a decent sized filter setup.

I used to have an Oscar about that size or maybe a bit bigger he was pretty cool. Feed him some goldfish he'll like it!

That heater looks TINY for that setup. I guess if your house is always warm, it will probably be ok. You need to read up on what the correct temp needs to be for that fish. You might need a second filter too, just my first thoughts.

i'm amazed you have a new tank and already have fish in it same day. did you use water from the dude you got the tank from?

I did use water from the previous tank, and reading up before i put him in, Cichilds that are older don't mind fresh water and it shouldn't harm them at all, I let it sit about 12 hours at about a 3rd full before I filled it all the way up and added some salt for it.
Again, I am new to this so only what i can find online is what Ive done.

Well there are 2 of them, both 75 watt and one at each corner in the back, and over night it brought the tank up to 82 degrees which from what ive read, is perfect for this fish to boost his metabolism. But i do plan on getting a much larger filter setup with new heaters and some air pumps.

OK, yea, I didn't see the second one. If it got up to 82 overnight then that is fine. You may not need a bigger filter. It just depends on how dirty the fish is. If you feed him live food, then yea, you might want to look at a bigger filter.

Go to big als online for food and filters. Makes any local place look like thieves. I had a 140 with three Oscars, a Jack Dempsey, a Green Terror, two Plecostmis (spelling), and 5 Red Tails. I used two of the big filters that hang on the back like 300 gallons an hour and a nice wet dry under the tank that flowed around 600 gallons an hour. Just depending on the fish load you need to do a water change about every two weeks. I always vacuumed the tank and then just refilled what I took out. Water changes are the big thing but really good filtration helps too. The bigger the tank the easier it is to keep clean. I almost bought bought that style there but thought holy shit how do you get to the bottom with the vacuum. My next will be a 140 long but I am waiting till we buy the new house next year. They are a bitch to move. Oh and stay away from underground filters they just collect feces and such.

cool. using the old water makes sense. i'm amazed you moved that much water.

you can move fish to a tank with brand new water but that water needs to have been decholorified first then bio-cycled. the biological cycle on a brand new tank of that size would take a week before it's all ready. it takes a while for the good bacteria to stabilize.

if you are looking to upgrade the filter, this is the best kind of filtration setup i've ever used and the most maintainance free:


it's sump style so im not sure if it will work with your tank.

You could portition it out with plexi glass and throw any type of larger schooling fish in there. Let them get big enough not to fit in his mouth and they will be fine. My Oscars (one was an Albino, one African Chiclid, and One Red Oscar) never messed with the Red Tails once they got big enough. It is suppossed to keep them busy too so they are less destructive.
