Well I am going to get another hang on filter like you have done next week, and as far as rocks Im going to be using Lava rocks right out of the river here and just boil them good.
No sense in paying for free rocks.

can't argue with free! I am one of the cheapest people on the planet. Never thought I would buy rocks.

And last night we picked up four convict cichilds and one Pleco, all for free because the owners tank was way to small for that many fish. Cant beat free!

So the tank has come a long way since I bought it last week.

Went out and got some nice sized rocks and a few lava rocks to put in with the new convict cichilds I put in with the big guy.
I found some free on CL here local, got 3 male convict cichilds and one female convict, then got a free Pleco sucker fish thrown it because he was too big for their tank.
Put an air pump in also, seems to clear up the water alot faster even with this single filter setup.

Still need to get another filter setup for the other side but heres what ive got so far.

I have a brand new in box Fluval 405 Canister filter that I'll sell you for a really good price, You can remove that single stage filter, your fish will appreciate it!

                    Little update
Changed up the tank a little with some more rocks and hiding places for the little cichlids and added some more substrate.

Planted some bulbs in hopes of having natural plants instead of the few fakes one I have in there now, so in a few weeks I should have them growing up out of the rocks quite nicely.

And the female finally laid some eggs!

you can move fish to a tank with brand new water but that water needs to have been decholorified first then bio-cycled. the biological cycle on a brand new tank of that size would take a week before it's all ready. it takes a while for the good bacteria to stabilize.

if you are looking to upgrade the filter, this is the best kind of filtration setup i've ever used and the most maintainance free:

it's sump style so im not sure if it will work with your tank.
I adopted a 60 gallon tank with a filter like this about six months ago and I have yet to get the filter and pump to work at the same rate. The pump returning water always either A) if there is too much water overflows the tank. or B) suffocates and has no water to return. Not to mention the location of mine makes it difficult to get a really hard syphon(sp.) from the tank.

I think i need to see one in action to kinda get the feel for it. But i went up to petco and didn't see a similar set up. So I kinda gave up. Plus the tank is built in under the stair case and kinda a pain in the ass to get to. So it's just been sitting there lit up and empty. lol. I do believe part of my problem lies in the fact that the tank itself is not completely level, but at the same time the previous owner got it to work, and he was a trucker leaving town all the time for days..

My brother is a fanatic in this field. If you need any info or tank stuff I can give you his number. He has decorations for the tanks and background stuff and what not. It's not my thing but I know he has a tank that is like 3 feet high and about 6 feet long he is trying to sale. He does live in Plano though.
