I grew up there (class of '81) and have two stand out moments from my youth that work with your question.

First, when I was young, about 6 or 7, so that would make it 1969 or 70, Burleson still had a train station of sorts in old town, about where the parking lot for Fresco's is now. My Dad's clinic was right next to it on the other side of the tracks, so we passed the station every day. One day, as we drove by it, there was something painted on the side of it. Asked my dad what does "N_gger, don't let the sun set on your ass in this town" mean? I'm sure he tried to explain it, but I really don't remember what he said. That sight sticks with me to this day though.

Second, when I was in high school, probably a sophomore, we had a new family move to town (yes, they were black). Had a son that was a football player, a running back. We were all excited that we might even be semi-competitive with him on the team. The first night they were in town, a cross was burned in their front yard. You could see it from 174 (the house they were buying was at the corner of Jill Ann and that small side street that mirrors 174) and everyone drove by. Of course, they moved out and never looked back.

It wasn't until that incident that I learned Burleson was such a hotbed for Klan activity, at one point in time, the main leader of the Texas KKK lived there. Pretty odd looking back to see how much things have changed.

The original owner had to go up there and tell them bitches to chill. At the time there were no black or messicans living around there, he was originally from FTW and sort of a shit kicker so he fit right in sorta of.

Before long he was friends with the local cops, of course he didn't tell anyone this little tid bit of info. We go up there for a big Easter cookout and party, we go into town for some alcohol and supplies, of course we get pulled over. He's acting all scared and shit, telling us that we might have to bail through the woods because cops hate messicans, he also knows how I feel about cops too, cops comes up and they start bullshitting and laughing, fucking asshole!
