My car was totaled out without the air bags deployed. However, usually if they are deployed they will usually total it out if it's not virtually a new car. The adjuster will deem it unsafe for repair (unibody car). That's what happened in my case.

Here's my baby.....doesn't look like much, but you'd be amazed at how much damage there was in the engine bay and under carriage.

Everybody that saw it felt bad. Even the Pro Tow guys said they were sick seeing that car like that. It was basically in perfect, like new condition.
Hell, mine's not even THAT bad. I need a hood, bumper cover, header panel, headlights, condenser, grille, the radiator support is bent, airbags deployed, and the tips of the fenders are slightly bent. It's really not that much. The unibody is fine, the doors are fine, the roof is fine, the wheels were not pushed back at all, it's just mostly cosmetic on the front.

That sucks bro, I had a coupe for 7 years and a huge duramax put an end to that when he ran me over, literally. With that money picked up the 91 gt i own now, one week of owning that car a jackass in a minivan plowed into me and now needs a frame alignment and a quarter panel. Insurance of course totaled it out, but was able to buy car back with a clear title and paid the car off in 4 months.

Here is mine after the wreck:

          Here it is now:

I still have to get the fenders painted, and I'm going to repaint the hood, but the 2500-3k I have in it now, beats the 10k that the adjuster quoted.

Sucks, bro. I feel your pain. I lost my 2000 GT this past Friday from a girl not paying attention and came barreling out of a grocery store parking lot. My adjuster totaled it out.

I bought it new in '99 with 8 miles on the odometer. Put about $7.5K in mods in it. Had 29,200 miles as of last week. Cut and dry. She was cited for failing to yield and her car was totaled as well. 20 y/o girl with a Chevy Cobalt. Her insurance is picking up the tab on my Mustang. Currently negotiating a payout with her insurance adjuster. Almost all the money I put in the car is meaniless because it's deemed "personal preference" items. I just recently put a $700 custom built torque converter in it and 4.56 gears. And tons of suspension work done. Garage kept for basically 10 years. Just going to get a hamburger and in a heart beat I was smashed into and then had a second impact going into a tree. My tire dismounted off the 15x4 weld and the steering rack let go. I barely kept from hitting left lane traffic and took it up and embankment. Fuel pump inertia shut off did it's job. Car was dead upon first impact. Was wearing seatbelts and it was a hard impact. Air bags didn't deploy, though. But the unibody was fucked. Could hardly open the trunk lid or driver side door.

Took everything I had to remain composed with this young girl crying in my face saying I'm sorry. Got some bumps and bruises, but nothing serious. Signed out AMA on the Ambulance ride. It was a cluster fuck. And so is dealing with her insurance company on getting this claim paid out. They are trying to low ball me, so we are in negotiations. And they surely don't like the piles of receipts I've got for them on add ons. That and the credit for it only having 29K miles on it and had $1200 in welds wheels on it.
Good luck with it. I had a similar issue in my old taurus - I slowed down and stopped on the freeway due to construction traffic, guy rear ended me going about 40 - broke his pelvis on the windshield - he was turned around backwards adjusting the DVD player for his kid. totalled my taurus, the insurance company wouldn't give me what I wanted for the car, so I told them I wouldn't take anything but the amount I wanted. I stood my ground for 6 months, and they finally paid me what I wanted. I was dealing with Allstate, for your info.

air bag deployment does not mean total loss.

the damage is high and over the rails. not a big deal. maybe less than 7k to fix. if you sign off on restraint components, i bet it can be burning gas for under 5k.

Holy Shit! Mine isn't NEAR as bad as yours was. My fenders are still straight except for the very front tips, which is hard to tell that there is damage. I'm sure they will stick out like a sore thumb when a straight hood is on it, though.

Whiteboy isn't getting this one. It will be fixed. Somehow, someway, it will be fixed.

That ain't too bad. Easily fixable by a skilled bodyman. Could be a lot worse, dude. That damage is all cosmetic. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. The right place can have your car back to you like new in no time.

Still have to deal with the adjuster on Monday before we figure out what direction we are going to take for the repair, but this is what it will look like when it's done, but with 18" polished Saleens instead of Bullitts.

Here is a pic of the radiator support. The body shop has already torn it apart a bit to make sure the adjuster can see all of the damage.
