Did you have it towed to your house? If it's at a tow yard or body shop and they total it you won't be able to take anything off of it unless you buy it back from the insurance company.
If it's at your house and you have stock parts to put back on to replace whatever you strip then that would work.

I think it might be a case by case deal. May depend on who your insurance company is too.

When my Explorer totaled, I was able to take my stock wheels and tires and stereo and swap them out at the salvage yard. I had put new 18" chrome wheels on it exactly one month before the wreck, and it had an aftermarket cd player, amp and subs in the back. Got to keep all that.

I was able to swap some parts on my '95 GT when it was totalled. Not wheels, but I did get the radio and put the stocker back in, plus some other minor stuff.

I see. State Farm didn't let me take shit off my '84 5.0 when I totalled it back in the day.

I talked with the estimator at the body shop and he said that there are ways to fix the car even if ins totals it. Something about owner retained salvage, and it does not end up with a salvage title. I will explore all of the options after the adjuster looks at it Monday morning. Either way, it will be fixed. I may have to source some of the parts myself to save a little coin, though. I have a feeling that I will be paying a little more than just my deductible, but whatever. It will come out better than it was before.

Sucks, bro. I feel your pain. I lost my 2000 GT this past Friday from a girl not paying attention and came barreling out of a grocery store parking lot. My adjuster totaled it out.

I bought it new in '99 with 8 miles on the odometer. Put about $7.5K in mods in it. Had 29,200 miles as of last week. Cut and dry. She was cited for failing to yield and her car was totaled as well. 20 y/o girl with a Chevy Cobalt. Her insurance is picking up the tab on my Mustang. Currently negotiating a payout with her insurance adjuster. Almost all the money I put in the car is meaniless because it's deemed "personal preference" items. I just recently put a $700 custom built torque converter in it and 4.56 gears. And tons of suspension work done. Garage kept for basically 10 years. Just going to get a hamburger and in a heart beat I was smashed into and then had a second impact going into a tree. My tire dismounted off the 15x4 weld and the steering rack let go. I barely kept from hitting left lane traffic and took it up and embankment. Fuel pump inertia shut off did it's job. Car was dead upon first impact. Was wearing seatbelts and it was a hard impact. Air bags didn't deploy, though. But the unibody was fucked. Could hardly open the trunk lid or driver side door.

Took everything I had to remain composed with this young girl crying in my face saying I'm sorry. Got some bumps and bruises, but nothing serious. Signed out AMA on the Ambulance ride. It was a cluster fuck. And so is dealing with her insurance company on getting this claim paid out. They are trying to low ball me, so we are in negotiations. And they surely don't like the piles of receipts I've got for them on add ons. That and the credit for it only having 29K miles on it and had $1200 in welds wheels on it.

P.s. - Since your air bags deployed. They'll most likely total it out. 99% sure on that. Sorry man.

This is what I did with my 04 GT. I've got it back, fixed (except unpainted fenders), and on the road for waaaaaaay less than what the adjuster quoted. My bags didn't deploy though. After buying it back and fixing it with money out of pocket, it's mine and paid off for about 7k less than I owed on it, (I was upside down bad) not to mention that it looks 10x better with the different hood and bumper cover I put on it. Also got me out of a payment a few years early.

Your's sounds a LOT worse off than mine. Sorry about yours.

I tell you, I have had the WORST 2 weeks of my life leading up to last night. I've been overwhelmed at work, my girl split, now my car is wrecked. When will it end?

All of the Dallas cops that I talked to on the scene complimented me on how clean my car is. The estimator at the body shop said he hasn't seen a Mineral Grey as clean as mine in quite a while. I am hoping to fix it, even if I have to source parts and pay a little more out of my pocket.

I had just washed it and had the alignment checked on Monday. Doug at NTB in McKinney LOVES my car. This is going to be a long wait to get it back.

Sorry to hear that. I hear ya. Lots of bad luck over a short period of time. Been there.

My car was totaled out without the air bags deployed. However, usually if they are deployed they will usually total it out if it's not virtually a new car. The adjuster will deem it unsafe for repair (unibody car). That's what happened in my case.

Here's my baby.....doesn't look like much, but you'd be amazed at how much damage there was in the engine bay and under carriage.

Everybody that saw it felt bad. Even the Pro Tow guys said they were sick seeing that car like that. It was basically in perfect, like new condition.
