    We had one blow at the shop a couple weeks ago, still bolted to the car, no damage done. Scared the fuck out of us.

    There was a dude I was in school with that was working on a roadside tire repair truck, he had one blow and hit him in the head. It was a miracle he didnt die, but he had some brain damage after that and couldnt take care of himself anymore, had to have round the clock care. His family sued and got a big settlement.

      Freaking hate split rims.. Cousin was messed up big time when one let go in the cage.

        Damn. Happened to my father in law when he worked for the city of Dallas. Driver said the tire felt odd on the way back in. He walked up to check it and boom. Caught alot of steel cable to the face neck and dislocated his shoulder.

          I fixed a lot of split rim flats when we owned a trucking company, and it was usually out in the field somewhere so there was no cage. After hammering the holy hell out of the ring to seat it as best I could, I'd clip on the air hose and then take a long walk away from the tire.

                  Best tire shop story ever. A Naynay is filling a split rim, and it comes apart, taking the hat off his head, but not hurting him. Owner comes out screaming to use the cage next time. Next split rim that comes in, the shop owner watches as the Naynay crawls into the cage and tries to work the rim thru the cage. He still laughs about it 20 years later.

                            It is incredible that just air can bend steel like that. I don't see any of the tire making contact on the closer side.

                              That side of the rim did, if you go back and watch carefully, you can see the metal contact the cage.
