In the original question, the "speeds match" which means the aircraft's ground speed never gets above zero which means it never acquires lift and won't fly.

That doesn't mean the plane couldn't just throttle up and take off - it just won't do it because the question, AS ASKED, says it won't.

They cover lots of things and still manage to fuck up every once in a while.

Yeah, like they covered the Carlos Hathcock shot

They said it couldn't be done and got so many death threats they had to redo it and show it could be done.
New episodes return Wednesday, Oct. 7th @ 9pm E/P on Discovery! Check out exclusive footage straight from the MythBusters' own video cameras: http://dsc.disc...

That's the whole idea behind the problem, the (negative) velocity of the treadmill matches the plane's linear velocity at the wheels so the plane doesn't move relative to the ground. From the problem statement, even if you throttle up the engines, the speed of the treadmill just increases, so the plane never moves. No movement = no lift.

Mythbusters screwed it up by allowing the plane to move forward on the treadmill. Of course if a plane with enough thrust can move forward on a ridiculously long treadmill at a speed that produces enough lift then it will take off.

Yes, but the treadmill will theoretically negate any forward movement that the engines create. The plane cannot take off w/o lift and lift is created from the pressure, or lack thereof on the wings. The only thing that is going to do that is wind speed; either from the plane moving forward fast or the wind blowing fast.

Then, it is a trick question. I believe the original assumption was that the treadmill could move fast enough to negate any forward movement. In reality, I see what your saying. If the plane's wheels can freewheel with very little friction, then the treadmill would have almost no effect because there is no possible way for it to spin fast enough. If the plane had it's brakes on to cause friction, then there would at least be some friction for the treadmill to work against.

                      plane(roller skate)
                      treadmill(treadmill)
                      thrust(your finger)

put a roller skate on a treadmill. put your finger on the roller skate. Put the treadmill on 1mph. watch the roller skate. It shouldn't be moving. Put the treadmill on 1231231241248mph. Still not moving, same amount of pressure with finger. Push the roller skate, it moves as fast as you can move your finger. Why is that? The treadmill is going warp speed backwards?!?!?!??!

the engines are moving the air, the treadmill is moving the ground. The wheels have no clue what the air is doing and vise versa.

There is none or very little friction caused by the wheels and treadmill. The plane might as well be floating above the treadmill.

It's kind of like driving your car on ice. You can spin the tires to 100 mph, but if you can't get traction (friction), then it isn't going anywhere. The plane and treadmill are doing the same thing, except the treadmill is doing the work instead of the wheels, but it will never overcome the thrust of the engine.

But, once again, the original assumption was that the treadmill could go fast enough to negate the plane's forward movement, which, in reality, is impossible.
