So how did they destroy it?"When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." -Benjamin Franklin
"A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury." -Alexander Fraser Tytler

In short they liked the flames the exhaust shot out and decided to take more pictures of it doing it and had the car driven in a manner that would make it spit flames the most. It caught fire and was on the other end of the track so it took time for fire crews to respond.Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.

As for the fire, Rotary engines have incredibly hot exhaust systems already. I have melted "turbo" mufflers in mine in a matter of blocks after doing a full split tubular exhaust on one. Also racing a friend up Haleakela Highway one night (pretty steep climb highway) when we got to Kula my friend commented how my car had 2' long blue flames that looked like an afterburner coming out of its tail pipes I could see why it burst into flames.
Could have easily melted a hole in the header or blown an exhaust gasket and just had exhaust flames take hold of the engine compartment.
They do say in the article that the wind was strong from the rear which is why the wing was untouched and the passenger compartment became engulfed in flames so quickly.Good judgment comes from bad decisions and a lot of that comes from bad judgment.
