Searching for a new project...

For several months, I have been looking for a project idea. I have looked at mustangs, camaros, and all the usual stuff. I started wanting to try to find something "different" and that lead me to a few different ideas. For the last few weeks I have really been looking into Fieros, but I've seen a few on the roads lately and decided it wasn't for me. Then last night something hit me!

When I was 16, I made a model of a Datsun 510. I know they have been done already and aren't terribly exotic, but it definitely isn't something you see everyday. I want something different and hopefully something sort of unique. My first car was an '81 Datsun 280zx so I have always been a Datsun guy. I have owned 4 280zx's since I was 15 and a 510 seems like a good fit.

If I can find one in decent shape, then I will scoop it up. I would like to do a swap to a CA18DET. I want to keep it "Nissan" as far as the drive train. Some ideas on the paint...

SR20DET is pretty common around here. It does make more power, but it's about twice the price. Not that price will matter in the end, I wouldn't immediately swap in a different motor. The motor would be the last thing to be swapped out. I would probably start with the suspension, then the interior, followed by paint... Lastly the motor swap.

In the mean time, I would enjoy the car and its power as is. Luckily the old school Datsun motors are simple and very easy to work on.

You will regret the CA, look for one of the SR20DE S14 motors if you are on a budget.

What about an older Skyline 2.6 I6?

Nissan has also made some decent V8s (nothing with an aftermarket though) but I'm sure they wouldn't fit.... so, LSjuan?

I've always thought the 510's were super cool. Wasn't a concept car of a new 510 just intro'ed a few days ago? Seem to remember something about it.

Direction for the suspension? Street, strip, or corners? I see one around Whitesettlment from time to time. Sweet look'n ride. I'd love to see one w/ properly extended fenders, e.g. steel wide body kit. I wonder if Datsun/Nissan had "good" steel back then. The stuff most cars use today will barely move, much less allow being bumped out to a wide body.

I think you should queer it up with a Honda motor. Kinda like people do with chevy motors in fords. 510's a slick Datsun. Jk, keep it Nissan man. They make some killer motors!
