I officially popped my night flying cherry last night. Crazy fun and scary with a fast plane! lol
It's going to really pay off this summer when it's 110 outside!!!
lol, never thought of it that way. All I see when I fly these planes is TRON! lol
Once my little girls school year ends and her bed time can be fudged, my wife can come to the field and man the camera. I'm thinking some long exposure pictures will friggen rock with a few planes in the air at once.
There comes a time when honest debate, serious diplomatic efforts, and logical arguments have been exhausted and only men and women willing to take up arms against evil will suffice to save the freedom of a nation or continent.

I honestly thought of tron first but want to make a ricer joke. Also a long exposure pic should be pretty cool.
So here's the scoop, I as the norm stopped half way through a project to start another. I decided while flying my B-17 information with my buddy's P-38 that I wanted a mass formation of B-17s. Only problem is my B-17 was $400 and even if we could drop a few grand to get a fleet of them, they are discontinued anyway. So I got the wild idea to make some scale looking profile bombers on the cheep. Today I maidened my prototype, it's 73", with single nose mounted motor and prop. total cost of the air frame is about $20. Total ready to fly cost is around $100. I picked a motor pop and battery combo that I know we all have, and and that takes it back down to $20 out of pocket cost.
I had some problems on the first flight and had to add some material to the ailerons to get it to roll at all. I'm going to remove those and cut new ailerons that are wider and should fix those problems. My goal is to have all 6 airborne by our war bird fly in and put them all up at once doing our best to fly a tight formation. Then it's back to the barbie bus project.
here are the video and pictures my wife took. I made a total of five flights on it today, I'd call it a success!
I got the simple 73" profile B-17 prototype dialed in perfect.
I'm ready to build the final product and was left with a nasty ugly prototype that I don't need anymore.
So I took it to the field and joined one of or full contact combat flights. I think this is the best bit of video I've caught to date and am happy to share it.
vid from this afternoon. Took the the prototype B-17 for one last flight before I pulled it apart.
After dog-fighting it last time, I was left without a rudder, so I had to bank and yank it.
I'd planned on it dieing but it just didn't want to, so this was officially it last flight. I will be parting it out this week, and building six more soon.
