Because that would "cost money", and tax payers dont want to pay for it, and local politicans like to claim they "save taxpayers money". One would think that a town with that much commercial traffic would re-route the main road around a low pre-1950`s rail road bridge.

But then again there are many smaller towns like this around DFW that absolutely refuse to modernize their existing pre-subdivision growth infrastructure until there is a total failure or complete gridlock on the roads - Forney, Sachse, Azle, Princeton, Haslet are the worst culprits of this. Forney ,however, is the worst and decided to wait until the main roads were chocked with traffic to do anything about it -- and to also deal with low clearance bridges built in the 1930`s by the WPA that ate many trucks over a 75-80 year lifespan.

Drove the entire length of the Lincoln Tunnel at 6" over clearance. The ENTIRE 1.5 mile tunnel.

Kind of suprised the PA didnt get him stopped sooner, and have the trailer pulled out with the tires deflated. Those officers are typically very quick to make life difficult for truckers that dare drive in NYC

Funny I just found out the 11.8 bridge is in the town where i grew up. Davenport IA. that bridge is way older than the 50s. betting more like 20s or 30s. That town has MANY low underpasses and bridges. The Goverment bridge to Arsenal island was a killer of many trucks also.
Its a old river town, Lots of cool stories about it, the mobs from Chicago use to hang out there, it was considered neutral ground there and they didn't have to worry about getting killed. Kind of a safe playground back in the day.

Want to bet? I have been under many where my antennas would ding as I went under, and the cant be much higher than the top of my trailer. one I go under when I go under into Detroit that I can hear the vines growing across hit the top of my cab.
But most give some for snow pack.
When it says 13.6 you can bet my ass is going super slow tell I clear.

At least in Texas, it's TXDOT policy to sign 4" under the lowest portion of the bridge.

We get several trucks can-openered a year. The boxes are weak as hell on any box truck (thin aluminum sheeting with a thin wood frame) and you can puncture them with a pen, or even punch through them at the right place. I honestly do not know how places like Ryder and Penske do things, but their claims departments must be huge. We only rent boxes to corporate customers, and they typically have seasoned drivers who know what they are doing. Regardless they still manage to de-box the box trucks.
