In light of Eric's Alaska thread, which I am supremely jealous of, I figured I'd post another DFWstangs adventure thread.
Of all the travelling and random shit I am lucky enough to have the opportunity to do, I firmly believe the seed for this one was planted years and years ago.

That video is cut short. A bigger black bear chased it up the tree. It's on youtube somewhere. I was told the black bears won't mess with you but I don't.
Yeah I wouldn't have shot it in that situation, but the muzzle of my 500 would be right in his face to sniff just in case he had an idea.

That's a different video.
Black bears can be just as aggressive as brown bears, and can definitely kill your ass. But in general, bears will normally avoid people.
Polar bears are really the only bears that will actively hunt you down to eat you as part of their normal routine.
The exception is when cubs are involved or if you spook them too much. The cub side is why my Dad was so ...concerned... (he'd never say scared) when he had some mosey by in the woods. He feels the only thing that made it go easy was the cubs chose to go downhill from him. Momma waited until the made it over a hill and then followed them, but she did rear up a little...etc.
Otherwise, he says the just sniff the air a little and walk on usually. I've either slept through them being around or they have not come by.

Yeah, nuts to that.
When we were in Yosemite a few weeks ago we weren't concerned about the coyotes and other animals we had walk up on us, but then we had a short conversation w/ someone we passed:
"Hey, did you guys see the bear?"
"No, which way? We'll keep out eyes open; maybe we'll see it in a bit."
"Not far back up there by the road... she had two cubs with her."
We said FFFUUUUck that and went somewhere else pretty quickly.
