The Military is the biggest single waste of ammo in this country. They will destroy guns and burn the shit up just to maintain their allotment for zero reason at all.

When you say "burn the shit up" - in what context? I mean, if it's being used - great. We -sometimes- would just fire off rounds at various targets at the end of the day. It was a useful experience honestly, compared to tightly controlled range days...etc...etc.

That was my experiences though, so just trying to get a handle on what is considered wasteful. I can think of some scenarios, but sometimes doing the "fun" stuff is good "training."

We where always told no ammo goes back. At the end of tank tables we wasted just as many 120 mm rounds as we fired while running the tables. Hell everyone got to fire off a few rounds from the cooks to the fuelers..

I had the same experience. I wish they would save the ammo for better training. Maybe have outside instructors come in and teach classes with the excess.

The Army alone burns over a billion rounds a year in training alone. That's not even counting the other branches.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't most ammunition used as 'cover fire' or 'suppression fire' in combat?

Continuous belts ran through a gun just to see if a barrel will droop or turn red. Guns ran long enough to see if rounds can cook off. Anything to destroy something and waste ammo in the name if getting their next allotment. Just like other govt agencies burning through monetary surplus.

On range days you typically have an ammo detail that loads it before the main body of firers gets there. Saves time for training versus everyone loading their own mags. Did this really need to be spelled out?

My wife's company (211 recruits) were all issued brand new M4s for basic. She personally went through probably 1000 rounds between sighting in the weapons and qualifying. She's a decent shot and qualified the second time through, some people went through 5 times.

She has a medical MOS and probably won't see a gun for other than qualifications. Imagine how much ammo the infantry guys go through. Then imagine how many people cycle through Army basic every week. FLW has 4 companies at a time, there are 5 bases that offer BCT and it's nowhere near the largest.
