It's a shame that people have to survive like that. I see the poor guys in downtown Dallas and I would hate to be in their shoes.

If I knew there were more like him, I wouldn't hesitate giving some money. Problem is, so many people take advantage of someone willing to give money for things like drugs and alcohol. I would rather take the person, and buy them food or room, so I know where the money is going.

When I was a youngster I used to drive around downtown dallas and throw loose change out in the street. More traffic, the more entertaining.

its a horrible cycle that can begin with just a few bad decisions or just a bit of bad luck.

                god bless.

I used to know a lot of the homeless in Denton, My favorite was an older white guy named Monty. All he owned was a bicycle the clothes on his back and a surprisingly positive outlook on life. One day I pulled up to his corner (I-35E & loop 288) and he had a black eye, and a missing tooth. I asked him what happened, and he told me a Mexican tried to steal his bike, and hit him in the face. I asked what happened? He said "I fucking stabbed him!"
Come to think about it I don't recall seeing him after that. Hope he's okay.

anyway, now a days there's a whole new bunch of homeless, and frankly I don't feel comfortable talking to them because I normally have my kid with me.

Me and a friend were talking about this very thing over the weekend. We're on opposite sides of the political spectrum and he brought up food stamps (his typical go-to to make someone he doesn't agree with try to side with him on something), to which I replied something about donating to NTFB, and eventually homelessness came up and I was just at a loss as to how someone could do that without making a long series of very, very, poor decisions, one of which being, having no family or friends left to rely on anymore. That's not saying that all of them are pieces of shit, but a majority of them have to be. Or am I just that callous?

Relating to the original post, I did see this video several weeks ago. I wonder what happened to him. I know Glenn Beck told people in the Chicago area to find and help him. Wonder if they ever did.

It is a cycle that can be broken by anyone with enough drive. A large majority of these people put themselves in this situation, and do nothing to break the cycle.

I had a homeless dude at Barry/Munger and 30 call me an asshole today for no reason other than I had my window rolled down and didn't pay him any mind. I have feelings, too.

I never give money to panhandlers anymore for this reason. Recently a homeless man asked me for spare change at a gas station. I asked if he was hungry and he said he was starving, and you could tell he was malnourished. So instead of giving him money I went in and bought him a meal from the gas station kitchen (chinese food). He was extremely grateful, and scarfed it down like he hadn't eaten in days.
