  • How men use technology VS women

This is just a normal blackberry commercial. It's not funny, so if you're expecting to laugh...sorry.

I love the underlining of the commercial though. This man is using his blackberry to consort with his peers in their field of rocket science. The lady however, uses her blackberry to take pictures of clothes for her friends.

    Hmmmm......

Am I sexist for thinking this or does this seem to accurately describe the male/female roles in America?...or the world?

I think it accurately describes the stereotypes of male/female roles. Commercials tend to follow stereotypes in order to seem more believable (unless made for shock value), thus making the use of the product believable. Then young people see these types of stories and perpetuate the stereotypes in future generations, at least to some extent. Also the viewer puts their own assumptions/perspective into the mix - for example, you picked out the gender difference instead of the race difference, whereas someone else might have seen it differently.

not every commercial has to accurately portray society. It might just be portraying two individual people

I'm pretty sure when you're trying to market something in a commercial, you want to grab as much of your target audience as possible. So, i'm pretty sure they're trying to portray that target, instead of just one or two people.

So according to that, then everyone who uses a Blackberry Torch is either a rocket scientist or a fucking hipster?

Lol. And now for the marketing perspective behind the scenes:

“Awesome! We can finally release this keyboard/touchscreen phone we’ve been working on and sell a ton of them! Take that, Apple! But how to market it...Hm, we need to demonstrate that it has both features, so how about a commercial that shows someone working using the keyboard and having fun using the touchscreen? But we should show more than one type of user to relate to our large target market AND show that we ‘value diversity.’ Whatever. I know - we’ll have an older white guy using the keyboard and a young black woman using the screen – that covers 6 demographic groups! She can be shopping, and he can be...oh, I dunno, a freakin rocket scientist or something. Oh, and then we’ll add this crazy yodeling song at the end to make people look up at the TV and have our logo burned into their memory. Muahahaha! $$$$”
