Headshot tips?

I was asked by a coworker of the female persuasion to take her headshot tomorrow so she can get it printed for an audition she has Saturday.

Since I've never really done this, I wanted to see if the photogs of DFWM might have any tips. Suggested equipment? I have a Nikon D5000 and a tripod. That's about it. If I need to pick something up, can anyone recommend a good camera shop close to 75/Northwest Hwy?

Seriously though, lighting will be everything. No direct flash.
Use natural light if possible, diffused artificial (NOT fluorescent) light if natural light isn't available.

I'd say an 85mm prime lens, shoot off a tripod at about F/8, indirect flash with a diffuser of some sort so you don't get harsh shadows.

Use a large aperture to blur the background, make the background simple, and shoot off a ladder or stand to get the subject to look up. It narrows the face and eliminates any double chin.

and a dedicated lens would be nice too. I roll with Canon and they have a 50mm 1.8 lens and it was only 100 bucks. Im sure Nikon has an equivalent. Very well worth it. Well give you a shallower depth of field (makes background more blurry). Also have her stand more towards you than the background i.e. dont have her right up against the wall.

Thanks for tips. I will put them to use.

I went during my lunch hour and picked up a Nikon SB700 flash, a Gary Fong cloud diffuser (looks like cone with a cap), a flash bracket and a hot shoe cord.

$500 later and I should be good to go. I'm going to see what I can find at her house for makeshift lighting.

I could not afford a prime lens along with the flash and such at this time, so I will likely use my 55-200 lens set somewhere around 80mm. Next time around, I will get another lens.

Once again, thanks for the tips. If anyone has anything that hasn't been covered, by all means, post it up.
