It's a miracle he survived, the trainer saved his life. The trainer was a former army medic and was able to actually clamp the vein so he didn't bleed out.
Edit: Apparently it was an artery. I have seen injuries like that but not without contact, guy must have had a stress fracture before or something. I am sure being that tall does not help either. Our 6'4", 245 running back in high school ran over some kid and during the process the guys legged looked like the guys above but his foot was facing the wrong way.
Yeah that medic saved that dude and did the smart thing getting him off the ice. First time I actually saw the video.
