  • We finished everything up and planned on starting it today. Turned it over to prime the oiling system and read zero on the dash gauge. Checked manually and still nothing. I suspect something went wrong when my dad and brother in law did the oil pump and lifter installation. I will pull the front cover to check the pickup seal tomorrow and go from there.

    • Yup, probably the pickup seal. My buddy did the exact same thing on his 5.3 swapped chevelle. Man he was pissed! hahah

If you decide to try the lettering, try mixing in a small amount of baby powder in the paint. Sounds weird but it works.

I have a flattening agent that is made for the striping/lettering paint I use, so I just use that, but it's a little expensive for you to just go buy a quart to use once.

        • Thanks for the tip crash. I have a license plate to restore that should offer a good opportunity for practice before I make a decision on the wheels. I will look into the flattener.

I pulled the pump today and the o-ring looked fine. There was however some aluminum shavings on the pump drive collar which look to have come from the housing. The first pump that showed up from scoggin dickey looked like shit and had a bent/cracked housing. This one has a question mark inked on it and and a whole bunch of impact marks from something. The internals do look fine with no scoring so I guess I will replace the o-ring and give it one more try before attempting a return.

          • I decided to wait for another pump after talking to scoggin dickey about a return. While we waited some little things got finished up. The XJ wiper motor adaptation and wiring are now done. We carpeted under the seat as the rubber mat only covers the forward portion of the floor. The manifolds got some paint and wrap because of their proximity to the subframe isolators. Wired the brake/TCC switch and did one final bleed on the system. Wheels and caps then went on. Also spent way too much time making bulb housings and lenses for the turn signal indicators in the cluster. The pump arrived today so with a little luck we may be able to start it over the weekend.

            • The motor made oil pressure after replacing the pump and pickup o-ring. We just started it for the first time a couple minutes ago and everything sounds good. I wont be able to finish things up until Thursday, but will get some video over the weekend.

EDIT: Forgot there is a youtube capture application for the iphones. I will get some real video once it leaves the garage.

              • I made it back to work on the truck today. Pulled the exhaust one last time to drill for and weld in the crossover (H-pipe). It will get paint and go back on tomorrow. All that remains now is the shift linkage and flaring the trans cooler hard line ends. They both had to wait until the exhaust was out of the way and then in its final position.

                  • We finally finished up all the mechanical items on the truck the past few weeks. We changed the front bag positioning along with completing, PCV system, radiator shrouding, brake vac source, trans cooler lines, hood mount repair, and finally the shifter. I drove it yesterday and only had one small issue with the brakes dragging which was an easy fix. I have been bad about taking images, but found a few on the phone. We are taking it for inspection tomorrow and I will get some final images and video this weekend.

half way through the shrouding fabrication.

                    • The hood and bodywork will need more alignment, but at least the hood hinges are not locked up. My Dad just left to get it inspected.

                      • Have you considered running antique registration? Only 1 license plate, no inspection, and the tag is good for 5 years. It runs on the states time frame, renewal is this year, 2018, 2023, etc. You can get them at any time, but if you register antique in 2017 it will require renewal in 2018, etc. It's only $50 or $55 for the tag, and they don't require insurance to get it. You have to have insurance of course to drive it but not to handle tagging it.

Technically you are NOT supposed to daily drive it, it's meant for car shows, parades, taking it for repairs, and things like that. I know many people that run antique plates and several have daily'd them. We are however not in a metroplex type environment.

                        • I think my brother in law did consider the antique registration, but like you said the use is limited to shows or other events. He lives in town and plans to use is regularly so just not worth the trouble. Inspection is cheap enough, and the plate thing is not that big of a deal.
