I believe you're referring to sulfa drugs. They are used to fight infection.

One of the stories I know about him as they were manning the guns, they came under attack by Wehrmacht infantry, and while still manning the guns, they had to return fire via small arms using the gun glacis as a shield while they kept up the bombardment of their assigned fire mission.
