  • Pretty boring most of the time. But I'm an A-Ganger (conventional mechanic) on a 688 submarine. I'm actually in the middle of my transfer leave. I've been working at fleet tech support doing pre deployment inspections and onboard tech assists. Pretty cool, but it's time to move on.

Some pics of mine from my last boat:

For some of you that wonder what the inside of a boat looks like...

And for those of you that know about the halfway night derby car races...

          • That was an amazing video with the Chinook. It tore itself apart. Why did it do that? Now I get to look up ground resonance

The short version is that everything has a natural frequency that it resonates at. If you get it vibrating at that natural, resonant frequency, it will begin to amplify the vibration. With enough amplification of the vibration, the structure begins to shake itself apart.

That's one of the critical considerations with rotorcraft. One of the tests we did was called a rap test where you knock on the aircraft about once per second and it will vibrate at its resonant frequency. I don't recall right off, but for the bell 204/205/212 (UH-1X models, too) it's something like 2.4 Hz. Then you make sure that none of the operating frequencies of main rotor, transmission, engine, tail rotor, etc operate near the natural frequency or its harmonics.

With ground resonance, you are altering the natural frequency of the rotorcraft and, in the case of the Chinook here, it got into some operating frequency and the vibration amplified.

              • And then it's just a run away vibration until it rips the chopper apart?

I also maintain it, so the hangar is my other office.

                  • You got it. It's pretty wild stuff. It's the same reason the Tacoma Narrows bridge collapsed.

I think Nikola Tesla first got started on it. The idea was the genesis of his earthquake machine.

                    • I remember reading about the earthquake machine. Harmonics are interesting in what just the right bump at just the right time can do

RR Trent.. give-aways are the size, spinner and fan blades- 80-A's and C-2's have the round spinner.

Wish I had a buck for every fan blade lube and MEC change I've done over the years!!!
