We painted my friend's Scout with Zebra stripes. It was a hell of a lot of fun.
It had a (school bus / Industrial) AMC 392 in it, with a '90s GM TBI setup to eliminate fuel slosh on trails. Not sure if that qualifies as "modern drivetrain old SUV" but I thought it was pretty cool!

Being that GM and several others have plug and play controllers for LS stuff, I'd use a 4LwhateverIcanfind, and rock out. The 6.0 truck engines aren't that expensive, but the 5.3's downright grow on trees. Pull-outs are almost all under $1000 dressed.ZOMBIE REAGAN FOR PRESIDENT 2016!!! hehComment
