From what I have read they are pretty bad ass. I almost bought one a couple of years ago that needed finished over in Cedar Hill. That is one of my favorite sports car body styles.

Why pay the turbo premium then?

The Turbo transaxle is built to handle a lot more power then the NA cars. I have done a tad bit of research on this.

Why does everything need an LS1? I'm no purist by any means, but if the first thing you think about is the engine then why are you starting with a 944? You're paying for a car that you won't use 90% of.

They were a very light well balanced car to begin with. You can do a lot with the engines but they can be delicate, plus lose the timing belt and good by. The LS1 is lighter, less maintenance, and can be built way cheaper. Don't get me wrong a 700 HP 951 would be a hell of a car but that is pushing it. You are right about using 90 percent of it but it would be a fun car. I have drove a few of them but never owned one. I really like the way they look, drive and sound and it is getting harder and harder to find a clean one. Only reason I was seriously looking at doing one was a guy had one mostly finished out and ready for the LS1 but he did not have the engine built yet. I would actually rather have a well built factory one but either way would be cool.

Porsche's are usually well balanced cars. Throwing a bunch of power at them makes them stupid.

                      Fair enough.

I'm not entirely in agreement with that statement, as there is a veritable smorgasbord of high-horsepower Porsches that will still tear your face off around a corner. I just think it's generally missing the point to look at a Porsche and think that the power level is the first thing you need to fix.

I agree, and I went through that debate with myself before I bought one. It depends what you are going to do with it...once in a while toy or closer to a daily. When I bought mine I thought I would be driving it a lot more, and it's a fact that an air cooled 911 doesn't typically fair well in our Texas summer climate, especially where the AC is concerned.

I went for more comfort and more power. However I didn't drive it nearly as often as I thought....no regrets at all, still one of the coolest cars I've ever owned, however I will go for an older air cooled version next time. Just not 3.0L old.

Mark, sorry about the car. Those German cars are pretty well built and are reasonably safe. Years ago a kid rear ended my wife in her 1986 928 S. The kid was in a Jeep with a big grill guard type bumper. The Porsche had a small hole punched in the rear bumper cover, and the Jeep folded up like tin foil. The jeep was so screwed up in the front that they had to winch it on to the roll back wrecker. After a four wheel alignment and a little paint work the Porsche was like new. They are tough.

after looking at this thread i went to see how much the 928's were going for cause i'd love to ls1 swap one of those. it is absolutely insane how much they get for a clean s4 and the GTS's are completely absurd and anyone who pays that for one should be shot IMO, 80-100k for a early 90's porsche that was designed in the 70's and has like 360hp, wtf?

They made 3000 GTSs worldwide, it was a $100k car in '95, it's a good bet that half of those don't exist anymore, so if the market's there then why not?

And what's wrong with the prices of clean S4s? $20k? Doesn't seem unreasonable. Obviously doesn't make sense for someone like you who is going to throw in an LS1 and drive in straight lines and complain about why you can't get the A/C to work, but then why would you want a clean S4 at that point?

Solid jabs thrown in there! A+, but if I put an LS in one I would do a 6spd road car setup. The reason I'd consider them is my dad had a black s4 when I was a little kid and it was the first sports car I was ever around. But $20k can get you a lot more car these days then the s4 with a fuck load better reliability and way cheaper replacement parts. The GTS looks almost the same with the same dated interior and very low pimp factor, especially for a 100k car!
