Digging this back up instead of making a new thread.

For those who have built rock crawlers, I need advice on a bullet-proof steering servo setup. I acquired an Axial Ridgecrest that has had a few upgrades but am cooking the steering servos. Linkage is free and not binding but it seems that even the metal geared servos are not cutting it, or maybe I'm just asking too much of them. A $50 water-proof Hitec HS-5646WP is the last victim, overheated and cooked.

Have you tried installing a smalle cooling fan like those used on ESC's?

The servo is mounted to the front axle, I don't think it would help much.

Mainly I'm asking about a really strong servo that either has a thermal/overload protection or if something like it added inline to a high-torque servo.

I researched this for a couple hours last night and it is like wading through a sea of bullshit posts on forum after forum of one fanboi kid flaming the next, I have yet to find an answer or a forum that I'd even ask the question and expect a rational reply.

I don't know much about rock crawling RC's, but would adding a servo saver help, this way it helps the servo from having to constantly fight every little bit of feedback it gets from the rigid steering set up?

I had one on it, the pic above is just to show the layout of the servo. The issue is the heavy load on the servo for extended periods of time as you are crawling, not sudden jerks . I'm hoping there is either a servo that can take the abuse or maybe something like a temperature sensor that can be attached to the outside of the servo that would signal when it is overheating.

Overheated? Are you sure? I've never heard of a servo that fried due to heat.

I believe the internal mechanisms may be getting bound up after hard impacts. I suggest using a servo saver on it.

There are many designs, some are spring loaded and some use plastic inserts. I had these on my awd street car and never had an issue with it.

Have you checked rctech.net? I use to frequent there, bunch of straight up guys willing to help. I have a slash 4x4 modded like crazy and started building a basher rustler. Trying to keep it as budget as i can. thus far only about $150 into it and all i need is a set of tires, a body, a brushless motor and a servo. Otherwise its ready! Hoping to keep it under $250 once finished.

I know it overheated because it was very hot when I went to check it out after it stopped steering. I pulled the servo apart and you could smell it was cooked.

It looks like I'm just going to buy one of the better high-torque servos and hope for the best.

You may look at this one. Lot more torque than what you're running.

Nothing cool as far as a car goes, but if you want photos of your ride...I can handle that. Check out my Facebook page if you're bored.

I sold my SCX10 on Saturday. I'm going to build a full out competition crawler in the next few weeks. I don't know if I want to go with an Axial XR10, Losi Comp, Gmade R1 or try to convert my Axial Wraith into a comp crawler.

                          Any input?

Well I just bought a Gmade R1 kit with lots of extras. It should be here next week. I'll post pics when it's done.

                            Stock photo...

I hope it is. The reviews online are great.

It was $580 before shipping, but I added some hop ups AND I had to buy all the electronics too since they only come as kits. No RTR at this point. The base kit is around $260 depending on where you get it.

                                Here's a pretty in-depth review.
