I enjoy halloween. I may be single, but i like being known as one of the "fun" houses for trick or treaters. I dress up and answer the door in costume. This year was a Reaper.
I sat inside my living room facing the door and playing on my ipad (which gave an eerie underlit glow to my mask) and kept watch for the children to come up the sidewalk. Most of the time they stopped midway up, catatonic. I could hear the parents laughing and having fun with it as their child just froze. Keeping in character, rising from my chair and slowly walking to the door usually was met with even more laughter from the parents as they pushed their kid towards my door.
I can still remember in my minds eye a small 2-3 yr old girl with a huge "i love candy" smile on her face just slowly over 5 seconds switch to absolute terror. When i offered the tray of candy it slowly came back to "i love candy" and she came forward to give me a hug. As she walked away she turned and waved which totally made my night.
I had over 50 groups come to my door, and about half took pictures or video with their kids. Had a few parents text me throughout the night with thanks on making the night memorable. I tell ya, just being apart of someones childhood even for one night is a cool feeling.
