Bought a Canon T3i

... for Stacy because she has been wanting to take good pics of Morgan (our daughter that turns 2 in a couple weeks.)

I finally broke down and bought the Canon T3i which makes me feel completely stupid because I don't know shit about taking pics... luckily this thing is pretty easy to use

so far my only mistake was taking a couple hundred pics and then uploading about 40 of them to my photobucket... but the problem is that I started the upload and then went to the card and deleted the pics... soooo only 3 of the pics saved to photobucket

these are the only three that saved and are by far not the best pics I had taken (likely excuse right) I'll post more later..

Any advice?

T3i is a great camera if you're just getting into DSLRs. Let me know what questions you have. I'll be happy to give you pointers.

Yes. Look at your dial, see that little green box? that means "Automatic." See all the little symbols next to it like the running man, the mountain etc? Those are also "Automatic." Never use those! lol Seriously if you want to get your money's worth learn to actually use the camera. Use the M, Tv, Av settings (Manual, Time Value aka shutter speed, Aperture Value). If you always use those automatic setting then you just bought a really expensive "point and shoot."

Also if you really want those pictures off your card they are easily recoverable, just stop taking pictures on the card and use a data recover program like RescuePro. The T3i is a great camera, a little much for a beginner but if you get into photography its plenty of camera for you to grow into

I have been playing around with the M, Tv and AV settings.. .some pics come out great.. some have come out super white... I haven't messed with cameras since my 8th grade photography class where I had a nice of my dads... same but different... a lot of little stuff to know that will make a big difference in the pics...

What Danny46 said is right about the auto modes. They're worthless.

Super White means "over exposed" as in you let to much light hit the sensor. If I was you I would put ISO on "Automatic" (in the manual setting) and play with the Aperture (which is the hole) and shutter speed (which is how long the hole stays open.) Your goal should be to get a correct exposure. Exposure basically means how bright or dark the picture looks. If the picture is really bright its "over-exposed" a picture that is really dark is "under-exposed") You want something in the middle. Once you get your exposure down you can start learning how to manipulate the controls, such as how the aperture number affects your photo and so on. A book would be good if youre a reading type. Popular Photography is a good magazine that you can learn from. The link posted above (POTN) is an EXCELLENT forum for photography, I spend a lot of time on there.

Like said, learn to use the "modes" of the camera. Learn the "exposure triangle" to start with...

I want a Mark5 3 just not willing to jump Nikon's ship to spend more money. Going to get a D600 around January for my b day. Its almost as good as the Canon for 50% less money and Im used to how Nikon's work. I still have problems trying to figure out how to change shit with my Canon S95...

I've had a 7D for over 2 years now and it's fantastic. I hope to have a 5d mkiii by next summer. I've thought about moving to Nikon, but I have all Canon L glass, so I'm stuck on this side of the fence.

why would you want to? The Mk3 5 is rated as good or better in every catagory than the D600 which is it's comp... If I didnt have all Nikon gear now, Id be all over a damn Mk3 5... If it was 2100 like the D600, Id prob get one anyway.
