What kind of gas mileage do the 5.0 motors get & how are they with towing long distances? Im in the market for a truck around the 5k budget & my parents have a 5.0 truck that my brother used to drive. But he said it killed him in gas drivng from Huntsville to Tennessee to see his gf. My mom swears its great truck & i should get one, I just TOW Trailers alot!
That is the one downside to that generation of F series, all of their motors suck fuel. My 95 I6 5 speed could squeak out 18MPG unloaded and 12MPG towing. My 5.0 got 15MPG unloaded and 10 towing. They can't match a GM in the MPG department.
After I rebuilt the 5.0 in my brother's 93 F150 ext cab at 212k miles, it got around 16 MPG mixed city/hwy. Rarely towed anything with it though. Now that bastard just sits in his driveway and functions as an extra trash can.
Well I just put 155 miles on the Bronco with a 5.8 today. All hwy, only hiting the lights getting to the gas station was not. Cruising 70mph at 1900 RPM I just pulled off an astounding 22.02 mpg. In town is the suck at 10-11mpg, but I think perhaps a new oxygen sensor, and plugs could bump that to 13-14. Dumpi did you notice about that mpg on the hwy?

You sure it's not just the odometer/speedometer reading wrong due to different gears/tires? That sounds way too high for that truck.
I used my GPS to log the miles. Actually with my taller tires my odometer ready less than it should. The Odometer read 147, and the GPS was 155. I have modified the stock tune with more ignition timing under 50% load in the 1300-2200 rpm range, lean bias on the oxygen sensor swing, and a leaner mix for mpg mode in the ecm. This was my first 100% hwy trip to try it out since purchasing it.
Black is faster. Yeah they suffer from the "Death Wobble" sometimes. Usually replacing the I-Beam bushings or tightening the I-Beam bracket will fix this. Sometimes the bracket can crack if the "wobble" became too severe before repairing. I still need to replace my I_Beam braket because of a crack. I'm not sure if it's clean black paint, the Vortech whine, or the Mondo BOV, but everytime I go somewhere I always have ot stop and talk to someone about it.

Black is only faster because I don't have my white one yet !
Bad thing is I just want to replace the radius arm bushings. Was great work.
LOL! I hate those front ends. My pop's replaced his long ago and they're holding great. Although, I bet there is a crack in the metal by now. Makes for a helluva turning radius, though.
His '95 351 still runs perfect. He's owned it since new, and the only major repairs we've had to do since '95 is water pump and radiator (twice), distributor, as well as an oil pan gasket and rear main.
I'll post up more of these pre 97's when I get home.
