They are not as weak as you think. As long as you keep them upright they are pretty strong. I have trashed more MTB wheels then road wheels.

I have several sets of carbon wheels, one is radial front, 2x drive side and radial non drive. The other set is radial front and 2x on both sides on the rear. I almost think the 2x rear is stiffer. Radial designs require more spoke tension so you have a greater chance of breaking spokes. I have had some crazy excursions with these wheels and not had any problems. Still true and smooth afterwards.

With that pic of Cav I think he got sidways and got run over which caused the wheel to get taco'd. Not saying its not possible to taco a wheel like that.

I'm with you, If I ever get a road bike I will still be wearing my baggy mountain bike shorts. All the comfort and support without the spandex look.

When you start bleeding because those baggy shorts have rubbed the skin off your thighs, you'll be sorry.

You will for about a week, then you will invest in some nice bibs. Don't hate it till you try it.

That was bad ass and the pit stop was a nice touch at the end. Is this the same guy from all the mountain bike videos? I would love to see a blooper reel if there was one. I wonder how many broken bones this guy has sustained over his lifetime?

No, you're probably thinking of Danny Macaskill.

Are you drawing a comparison to the forces that a road bike wheel sees versus a mountain bike wheel? LOL. It seems like you are.

Adjusted properly and when your but gets use to it they are great. Bigger seats are actually worse on your but and thighs.

I ride my road wheels on my cross bike on gravel dirt, rocks, and short track with no issues. I seem to have equal comparison. All I am saying is road wheels are a lot stronger then people think they are. Everyone assumes that everything made for a road bike is brittle and prone to failure. I wouldn't want to race on them if they were. Speeds of 25-30, hard turns, rough pavement, cracks, and other obstacles in the road would destroy a wheel if they were that brittle. No different then people that refuse to buy a carbon fiber bike because they think they are too weak and can break.

I pulled my chain into the wheel on my road bike and shredded one or two spokes and nicked a few others IIRC. It was a Velocity 32 spoke in the 650 size. I did have discs on that bike so that helped but I actually rode it home. I was around three to four miles out when it happened. It did wobble a lot but I made it. Took it to the bike shop and they fixed it right up.

Having a 32 hole wheel helps a lot there, the more spokes, less tension so if you do loose one it doesn't take the wheel way out. I broke a spoke on a 24 hole wheel and it was so far out of round it rubbed the chain stays.
