  • Late '70s-'80s Chevy Short Wides

I'm kicking around the idea of buying a Chevy short wide to make into a cruiser/hot rod pickup for awhile. Anyone got any sweet setups or pictures?

Here are some pics of my shortwides:
The brown truck is a 1978 with a 2003 lq4 6.0/4l80e with a 3/5 drop. its got a stall and posi with 4:10's but needs more tuning. ran 8.7x's
the black truck is a 1981 with a 91 suburban front clip, it has a 2001 ls1/4l60e, 3:73 posi, with full air ride. it has run 13.65 @ 100. The second pic without the bed is the begining of the new set up with 22x8 & 22x12's the truck just got a porterbuilt crossmember and is currently being back halfed..

The blue an tan truck is a 1987 that I sold a couple years ago it was a 350/700r. It had a 5/7 drop, and was a damn good truck.. I liked the rough look of the truck.

Are they pretty cheap to work on? I mean I know powertrain for anything is pretty pricey to build if you want it done right, but is everything else relatively easy to work on and fairly cheap? Never considered a hot rod pickup before.

I think the parts are reasonable. And the truck are everywhere. There are also endless aftermarket parts.. I'm a HUGE fan of the LSX swaps due to the durability and power..

they are easy as pie to work on..62-72 was coil springs which i prefer over leaf springs. what do you want to do with it? that website i posted has sections for every generation of chevy truck and 73-87 is the second most popular after 67-72. I owned an 80 lwb that i got for $700 ddrove it damn near daily for 2 years and never had to mess with it

I really just want a nice hotrod/cruiser. It will probably never see the track, and it won't be a daily, but it would be nice to drive to work on a Friday or something. An LSX swap would be cool, but would it be cheaper to just build a 350 based stroker with a throaty cam and a decent set of heads? It doesn't have to be super fast, but a mid 12 second truck would be cool, with a nice interior, lowered, and a good set of wheels.

Parts are cheap. Just make sure you check the frame for damage. Common stuff to look for on the frames are cracking around the steering box, shock holes wallowed or cracked out and bent frame horns in front. Parts for these trucks are everywhere. Are you wanting a roller or something that runs and drives?
