  • Bedrug and Undercover Flip upgrades

    Hi boys.. and Leah,

Well, as some of you know I did trade in the Bimmer at Grapevine Ford to get a new Ferd 15000.

First things first, gotta get a bedliner and Tonneau. I decided on a Bedrug liner. I read plenty of good reviews on it and thought I can always go get a spray liner later if I want. I also got the Undercover Flip tonneau. It's a lot like the BakFlip G2 but the cover doesn't rest against the cab when fully opened. I also like the construction of it a bit better than the G2. It is just a little better thought out. Installation was pretty dead simple so I won't bore you with it..

Oh yea, pics. I haz them.. more later

Like the G2, the Flip has drain tubes that you route through the bed plugs in the forward bulkhead. I was able to hide the tubes under the Bedrug for a clean look. The only downside I see is that they don't have any water management at the rear of the mounting bars. It will leak water towards the rear if you're on an incline. I'll have to see if that really is the case.

The Bedrug is held in with velcro. The hardest part of the installation was finding the mounting holes to screw my tie downs back into the bed, and even that wasn't really that much of an issue. It has a nice feel to it. The Rug is made of polypropylene (yea I needed spell check for that word) so you can power wash it out if you need to. It should be mold proof. We shall see if that holds true.

I'll mostly be using my truck for hauling lumber and occasional towing so I don't think I need much more than this for protecting the bed. However, I do appreciate any advice other truck owners might have.

Next up is a road trip to southern Illinois for Labor Day weekend.

And for those that don't know the Ferd 15000. Go get your eighth testicle.

That bimmer was gorgeous. Would not mind it at all.

my buddy has the same exact setup on his Silverado. Purchased them with the same thought/uses as yourself, light lumber hauling, trips, etc. Has had it for a year and absolutely hates it. After having to fold the cover back/forth so many times to haul items that were taller than the bed, and the hassle of trying tio slide the lumber across the carpeted liner. he just ended up taking the whole damn thing off and reselling. used the money for a spray in liner and rocks an open bed.

Looks nice though. Hope it works out!

I loved it, but it had two things going against it. One is that I'm 6'2" and it is basically a compact car. The rear seat can't hold anyone else when i'm driving with my kid's child seat. The other thing is that I actually do need a truck. More and more I find myself borrowing someone else's truck.

Way to rain on my parade.. just kidding..

We'll just have to see if it works out or not. As you said, I can most likely sell them off if I end up not liking them..

lol definitely not my intention. When we would meet up for a job, we just ended up using my truck as it was too much of a hassle to get his "ready" to work, per se.

If it helps, I dig the color of the Ford. Choice.

I'm 6'4" and I didnt realize they were that tight. A Z3 always had plenty of room for my legs though.

I'd have to check that out. I found myself resting my knee against the door or the console. I'd extend the steering wheel all the way out so I could pull the seat back a good bit but it still felt small..

Back in June, I was borrowing a buddy's Dodge Ram and just couldn't get over how much room it had. I felt like I was driving a damn cathedral, and it was good. Then I bought the new house and my wife said the words that no wife ever utters, "Honey, you need a truck".. Well holy shnikies. I was down at Grapevine Ford before she could change her mind. Even bought her favorite color. She fell in love with it when she tried out the air conditioned seats. Those things were awesome when the temps hit 110F.

BTW, this is the best I've been able to do on the hwy. I was going 65 the entire time. I've been reading about hyper-milers getting about 35mpg on an F-150 Ecoboost V6 with four adults and their gear in the back. I think I should be able to do 25 to 30 on this thing with a bit of practice. I've been able to average 16.5mpg around town.

You made a great decision on the bedrug. Had one in the last 2 trucks and love them. I have hauled a motor and rear end in the last one. The rear end was never tied down and I ended up with a large 4" circle dent about 1/2" deep. Didnt mess up the cover one bit. THey also have GREAT customer service. One had a small blemish not really worth messing with. After a while I some velcro came off the paint and I needed more. Called them up asking for velco, told them about the blemish in the cover and they sent me out a new one. NEver once asked when it was purchased or where it was purchased. They just asked me to send the old one back in the box.

I also have a Bakflip F1 (your cover looks almost identical) and its a great cover. Leaks a bit but nothing bad

I had a Bedrug in my 150. I never hauled logs or rocks but often had large boxes of stuff, furniture and bicycles in the truck. The Bedrug was perfect. It kept the stuff from sliding around, didn't scratch anything, and it required no maintenance. I never covered the bed of my truck.

Do you have the 5.0? I just bought a 2012 SCrew 4x4 w/5.0 and get 15.5-16.5 city and 18.5-19.5 hway so far. Seems that 65 is the magic number for best MPG on the hway.

Yea, I've got the 5.0 with a 4x2 FX2. I thought about getting an EB V6, but the $1000 premium just doesn't justify it for fuel economy alone. I would have only considered it if I had to tow a lot.
